Hey guys, I'm building a new system for gaming and was wondering if a gtx 1070 will pair well with an i5-7600k? I'm only going to be gaming so my question is: will the i5 be enough or should I ge the i7? I'll be gaming at 1080p 60 hz btw, Possibly 144 hz in the future.

If you have the option and it doesn't break the bank why not go i7. i5 should be sufficient though

Would I even use it to the full potential while gaming? Thats all I'm concerned about. I don't want to spend an extra 100 if its not going to matter for gaming (sice that'll be the most demanding thing I do with the system)

Wait for ryzen 5. Not sure why nobody else mentioned it, but there's very little on Ryzen 5 pricing. I'd guess you'd be able to get i5 level performance for cheaper. 7 was a dissapointment for many, but who knows, maybe Ryzen 5 will kick ass.

Don't buy the unlocked i5, 4c/4t has its days counted, get the locked i7 7700 for the same price, you will get longer future proof, better performance in both multi-threaded applications and GAMES since the whole purpose of DX12 and Vulkan is to have games benefiting of more threads, even on skylake the tendency was already rising:

yes the locked 6700 still beating a highly overclocked 6600k, and keep in mind that b250 motherboards are the half the price the z270 ones while the stock cooler (provided that you don't mind its noise) is sufficient making the costs the same if not even better for the i7.

Very interesting! I might just go for a i7-7770 since it can boost to 4.2 ghz. How about b150 motherboards?

They will work only if their BIOS are updated, which is never a guarantee, if they aren't you can only update them if you have a Skylake CPU at hand, in my case it was no issue as I originally had a 6700 (which I sold) so I could update my h110m BIOS before installing the 7700.
