Wireless repeater?

Go to solution Solved by 79wjd,

You can connect via ethernet to a secondary router in between acting as a range extender/repeater, but you will still have wifi at some point in that connection.

But NEVER use wireless extenders (which is what you're describing). They're trash.

You have three options:

-Wifi card if you have a strong enough signal.

-Run an ethernet wire half-way to a router (and use that router as an access point) and use a wifi card in your PC.

-Run an ethernet all the way from the router to your pc.

-Try a powerline ethernet adapter.

I am currently in the process of building a PC and I am contemplating whether or not I should get a wireless network card (since I already have a wired-only one). The reason I am thinking of getting a wireless network card is because if I want to use the wired one I will have to run an ethernet cable from the top floor of my house to the basement and there are doors in the way. Not only that, if I used a wired connection; I will pretty much get double the network speed. I have a couple spare routers lying around and I was thinking of using one of them as a wireless repeater (or something like that), where they intercept the signal from upstairs and allow me to connect to the internet from the 'wireless repeater' via an ethernet cable. Is this possible? Any suggestions?

Possible? yes. Good? not in the slightest.

Depending on how old your house is you could use a Powerline Network Adapter.

That really depends on the circuitry, even in a newish house. My house is relatively new but PowerLine SUCKS here.
