ok so i have a dream rig that i would like to know how much it would REALLY take to bring to life. i really like the thought of virtualized gaming. it makes more seance to me to have 1 or 2 servers with VM's and a nas running, then 5 or 6 desktop's all over the house + the nas. i know every one has there own thoughts on this. but what i am looking for is server parts so i can build a custom rig for my self. maybe some thing i can do a build log on. i am still new to this side of PC's but do know my way around the inside of a case. but as to what cpu is faster for what job i cant say.

i am under the impression that the more cores you have the better / faster the PC.

so i was looking for a 12 core and a Dual Socket mothered that would give me 24 core's to play with.

now i maybe be thinking all wrong about this, but thats why i am asking. can this be dun, and if so how and for how much.

How many times are you going to post?

Running a central server will cost more, be a hassle to work with, and give you a worse experence. Just get some old dell optiplexes and put gpu's in them if you want to game. Cheaper, more flexable and faster.

How cheap? And what sockets? X58 dual socket boards are $60 and some of the 6c/12t Xeons from them are $35. Buy a fuck ton of DDR3 in bulk.

but vm's are a pain.

ALso you can get i5 desktops for about 130 and there going to be much faster for games and most desktop tasks.

True, I'd look for an office or whatever throwing out old PCs and scrap stuff from them.

I want to find out who I can talk to at my uni... we have PCs ranging from i7-860's to i7-6700's lol

yes i know how you feel.

but this is what i want to do and am asking how to get it dun. i have not got any response as to how to get this dun yet.

so i am parting it out and asking how to do each thing.  you have shown me some good off the rack server's.

now i am looking into a custom rig. i am looking for names and links so i can compare.

How do you want to do this?

What do you want to do on the vm's?

do you want thin clients or directly connected?

What os?

Total budget?

thank you, as to what socket it dont really mater. just looking for the best set up i can get for the best price. id like to shoot for about 100$ for a bored and each for the cpu's. or about 300$ if the whole rig.

i like unRAID cause of haveing a GPU for every VM

what i want to do on them has to do with the OS's so,

some form of android os ( TV Box ) and windows 7 and 8 ( games / work )

and some free space / power to play with some lunex os's

and some thing to run my home automation and security system.

i was thinink about haveing 1 or 2 thin clients at a workstation maybe,

and budget is still 100 to 150$ ish at most. but i am willing to get a bored then CPU then, and so on.

unraid is just linux. No reason to run it, its less flexable and costs money.

Not happening.

SO just install something like proxmox and then setup all the vm's you want from there(just like unraid, but better vm features, more flexable, and free)

Id probably get something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Precision-R5500-Xeon-E5620-Quad-Core-2-4Ghz-4GB-Ram-2x-PS-NVS-290-No-HD-/391698025352?hash=item5b33058b88:g:VTUAAOSwHsRYCZUb

your not getting a system any cheaper that that that supports 2 gpu's

but thats only a Quad-Core

what about this CPU?  i can get a bored for it for 120$ that would give me 24 cores with the 2 CPU's

i am kind of wanting just a motherboard.

i ges i need an ATX to work with power supply's

In virtualized environments all the computational power is remote from the peripherals. Introducing lag does not strike me as an optimal gaming system design choice.

If one has a single gaming VM active at any one time, very high core count cpu would be seriously under utilized. Since each gaming VM requires a dedicated gpu, regardless of core count one is ultimately limited by the number of gpu supported by the motherboard and cpu.

so there is no way to do a malty gamer VM set up ( 7 gamers 1 CPU ) on the cheep then. i know i have to put $ into the GPU's

i watch these vid's and want to try some things out, but dont know what i am dong and just end up wasting time and $.

case in point

( tho i would like MORE cores lol )

...

What you might think about is creating a server rack. One motherboard & gpu per gaming system, similar to the video, all mounted in a single rack cabinet.

so end up with the 5 or 6 systems but keep them all in the same spot lol best of both worlds. its looking like thats what i am going to have to do.

i really would like to find a way to use VM's for some of it. Dual Socket Motherboard with 2 12 core CPU's and run 4 android vm tv box's on it or some thing.

half of why i came up with all of this is cause i want to do some thing / play with VM's. now i dont really know what to do. i dont want any thing like some one else has. but cant afford to just through $ at the problem ether.
