I am currently running a rig with an i7 920 2.66 ghz @ 4ghz.

It is mainly a gaming setup, and I am planning to get a Vega card at release.

Now this CPU is probably around a decade old or so, but I have no idea of how fast it is compared to newer generations of CPU's.

I am mainly interested in getting better performance in games than in any other programs.

Question is, what is an i7 920 @4ghz comparable to? What would be a proper upgrade from it?

A skylake or kabylake i7 would be a pretty good upgrade over it. An i7 920 would be comparable to like an ivy bridge i5 in gaming.

If it's only for gaming get the i5-7600(K). If it's for gaming and editing etc. then get the i7 7700(K). the stands for overclocking.

Yeah the i5 7600K seems more in my price range. How much performance benefit would I get, when both are overclocked? I know it is an insanely hard question but that is what really matters to me. So a guesstimate.
Also, if there is a hexacore CPU or multithreaded, that would be better just to make sure I get the most out of new DX12/Vulkan titles.
