Hello!

As the title mentions, I have a fast question is there's any idea trying to get an external harddrive for games.
I'd be running them from the harddrive on my laptop and I'd have a USB 3.0 port to plug it into.

As I've understood it wouldn't reduce performance anything drastic since I'm not really running any demanding AAA games.

Will it run smooth though? And is there any specific harddrives that would work best with my inquiry?

/Emil

You'd be limited by the speed of USB 3.0 for the loading times. Why do you need them external? If you must go external, I'd use a USB 3.0 based SSD.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Thanks for the fast replies. Basically I would get an external drive just because I don't feel confident enough to tinker with my laptop. I know there's an available harddrive slot internally, but I'm not quite sure how to get at it and I don't really know what harddrive to get (that fits). Nor do I know how to open the laptop, it's an ASUS ROG GL553VE incase somebody knows! I tried unscrewing all the screws on the bottom but it wouldn't go off, so I decided to quit before I broke something :D

Do you know the current specs of the machine? It will either be a free 2.5inch drive bay or a PCIe Gen3 x4 slot.

Absolutely, a Core i7 7700HQ processor with an GTX 1050ti graphics card. 256GB m.2 SSD memory & 8 gb of ram!

You will have a empty 2.5inch drive, before taking apart check the warranty and don't force parts of the laptop

Is there any usual way to take off the bottom cover on laptops? Apart from unscrewing all the screws that is. It seemed quite solid even though I removed all of the screws, and I didn't want to force anything like you said. Probably something I should consult the ASUS support with?

But alright, so any 2.5inch drive would do. That's good news :)

Yes any drive would do but if you want good boot times go for an SSD or even a hybrid drive Yes you can do or just search youtube
