If you're set on upgrading, wait for Ryzen and see whats worth getting. Either way you go you'll need a new board, DDR4, and a new cpu.

i5 6600k @ 4.4ghz on Hyper 212 Evo

Powercolor RX 480 8Gb Red Devil @1330Mhz

Bottom line:  Don't be a spaz or an 800lb gorilla when installing your expensive CPU, and you won't have any problems. --Phate.exe

i'm in a similar situation.

at the moment i'm thinking Ryzen, a 4790K (which means keeping the mobo and RAM), or skylake/kaby lake. Ryzen and skylake/kaby need a new mobo and DDR4 ram as well. so really it comes down to whether you can spend that much

I've heard a lot of games now a days utilize 6 cores now, should we think about 6 core cpus as well?

Very few games actually utilize multiple cores right now but the number that do is growing and I can't think of any where 6 cores would be beneficial to have. 6 core cpus are also in that area where a little more will give you 8 cores which would be more useful.

there's a few modern titles that can use more than 4 cores, resulting in better minimum FPS + less FPS spikes. i think some include the division, ARMA 3, BF1, Rainbox six seige, watch dogs 2... to name a few

They pretty much all use multiple cores now.  That's why i3's, which usually have better single-core performance compared to an i5/i7, don't run games as well.

hey guys I have a 4690k and a gtx1080 and was wondering what would be a complementary cpu for the gpu I currently have?

obviously wait for ryzen in 3 days !!! Its going to be a super great cpu for the price or if not, then you get an intel and you're sure that you didn't get screwd by being impatient. :)

Modern ones are using more cores but compared to everything out there, not many do. Still though an 8 core would be the better purchase.

If by modern you mean everything for at least the past 5 years, I agree. Open up Resource Monitor sometime and run a game. You'll see how many threads games use.
