Laptop will not switch on hardware problems?

What laptop is this? any indicator lights when it gets plugged in?

Verify that it's getting power, if you've got a voltage tester you can check both the battery and the power adapter.

 

@bgibbz is right, more info would definitely be nice.

i've seen a few laptops do something like this before, usually the ACPI is just jammed up, try holding to power button down with power connected for long enough to turn it off normally, then try turn back on.

also reseating the bios battery fixes this about 80% of the time

Search around for a reset button (look In the manual). I had this issue in my dell inspiron and it was fixed by pressing a needle-reset bottom on the bottom.
