What if I go to 4K directly from 1080p?

LyricalRain018

Hey guys, I just wanted to check something. I am going to build a pc in April. I have a dilemma whether I should get a 1080p rig or 1440p rig. Many people say that when you enjoy a game, 1440p does not feel too much different from 1080p. So i feel like i should get a 1080p rig now, play at 1080p for 5-6 years, probably when 4K gaming has come down in cost and then overhaul my rig to play at 4K. So what should I do? Play at 1080p now and upgrade to 4K in 5-6 years or play at 1440p for a lot longer?

If you go directly for 4k you should expect to update your rig every other year. A 1440p rig can probably be updated every 3 or 4 years.

Now if you think about how much you're spending right now vs spending 2x to 3x more money and also more often I say hold on. While 4k gaming is possible it's just fairly outside of the reach of most consumers the costs compound like this.

I would suggest going 1440p ultrawide its better than 4K with scaling issues (especially in Photoshop). I own both and ultrawide is the way to go.

It depends on the screen size and how far away you're sitting from the screen (and also how good your eyes are personally).

You can use this calculator made by Nvidia to put in some info about the screens you're interested in and it'll help figure out how crisp the screen will look to you.

Interestingly, when I put in my 1440p 27" screen at ~3 feet sitting distance, it says that the pixel density isn't too good, but I personally can't see each individual pixel if I put my face up to the screen. On the flip-side, I can tell a huge difference between my screen and my younger brother's monitor quality (1080p 27").

The issue with 4k is that to keep newer games running well at that resolution, you'll probably be upgrading quite often, whereas 1440p will mean that a beefy rig can handle newer titles better.
