So I play lots of games off of steam and have never had an issue like this before. Of the 10ish games I tried, only tf2 and portal 2 created this issue for me. This is a new desktop/monitor setup and my first time playing these games on here. So my problem is that when the game launches, my screen goes black for a moment and says "HDMI 1" and then reconnects, as though it were just turning on. I think this is just because a setting in game is different than a setting of my computer, so my graphics card has to figure out the best way to display it or something? Anyway, when I click my windows button or Alt-tab to switch applications, it black screens again but doesn't reconnect and display anything until I click those buttons some more and it brings me back to the game, and when I leave the game it black screens and then never shows my desktop again until I restart my computer. This happened with Avorion once and then I changed the resolution in game to my monitor's native resolution and that fixed it, but even then it didn't hold the black screen when I switched applications or quit the game, so I don't know why these two are. Any settings that might be causing issues? I have an ASUS VG245 gaming monitor and Radeon RX 480 8gb GPU with ReLive up to date and showing no problems, so I'm not sure what else to check at this point and restarting my computer after I play these two games is very annoying. Resolution and aspect ratio for both games is 1920x1080 and 16x9.

Out of interest, out of the 10 games you've tried, are they the only two source engine (Valve games) you tested?

They are the only two Valve games I've played yes. If I remember correctly Dota 2 is a Valve game so I could try that one too. Any idea why Valve is causing issues or how to fix it?

Honestly no idea, its possible the source engine doesn't like your gpu, or gpu driver. I would first verify the game cache in steam, then reinstall graphics drivers and see if that fixes it.

Only minutes ago I updated my GPU drivers, so I would think that would fix it if that's the reason, and I would be surprised if both of those games had an issue with the game cache, but I'll check them.

you're probably right about the game cache, but it always good to check the basics first.

No issues in the files, and I just tried Portal 1 with the black screen on launch, but after changing resolution to the correct amount, it quit with no issues.

so its fixed?

Not exactly. TF2 and Portal 2 still do it, just not Portal 1. Weird? I think so. I changed portal 2 to 4:3 aspect ratio and then it still black screened, but didn't freeze on the black screen after quitting the game. More testing to follow shortly.

Just launched Portal 1 again to see what the settings were and they are the same as everything else. Changed nothing and this time it stayed black after quitting the game.

I honestly have no idea, is it possible its your monitor causing some weird issues. Do you have another monitor/tv you could test?

Already tested an old Dell and it worked fine. I'll see about contacting ASUS and tell them what I'm seeing and see if they say anything. I launched Portal 2 on 16:10 and that seemed to quit fine, so I'll test a bit more and see if I can get that to work at least for now. Something that doesn't break my system when I quit the game at least.
