Best high capacity external storage

So I'm looking for something in the 4+ tb range for external storage, I know that USB 3.0 is a option but is that going to be too slow for day to day use on it? Are there any good thunderbolt 3/ USB 3.1 storage options out there? I am going to be using this on a laptop, so that is why I need it to be external.

If you are just going to store videos and  Backup I would say USB 3.0 drive you should be good.
