Don't worry about them. They are for coax cable (For TV, Cable, Satillite, and Internet), it just surge protects it too. That's if you have anything with coax cable that you need to surge protect, otherwise, you don't need them.

Surge protectors often have surge protection for various other things outside of the power connector. Like Cat5e/Ethernet and coaxial like those nubs above.

Thanks guys.

Saved me like 50 dollars. I thought it was something I needed and I could only find like 80+ dollar ones with them.

No problem. Just remember surge protectors have a expiry date when they won't protect as well anymore, and you'll need a new one.

Erm, this is false.  Surge protectors don't expire by time, they expire by joules.  The MOV is effectively consumed each time any surge goes through it.  But it's not time, there is no date, it's the number of joules.

Well sooner or later, whether it be little surges or one big one, it will need to be replaced. And there will be a time eventually as the capacitors inside break down, and/or burst or leak from consistent use.

Capacitor...?   There are no capacitors in a surge protector circut.  It will be the MOV.  The MOV is consumed.

Please at least Google stuff before pretending to know what you're talking about. :/

Just did Google it.. Would say 60% of the surge protector circuits contained at least 1 capacitor, along with zener diodes to limit any voltage spike, and various other electronic components (resistors, diodes, inductors). Yes some contain the MOVs and use them, but some also use caps and other circuits to accomplish the same thing.

But none of the circuits in the surge protectors in this thread.  You don't understand the topic well enough to follow along.  All of these surge protecting power strips exclusively use MOVs because MOVs are cheap.  Yes, even the $100 Monster brand ones.

You're looking at circut designs for applications not covered by the devices in this thread and you do the even understand that.

Please do a better job at googling stuff before talking about things you don't understand.

It's the MOV.  It's not going to be anything other than the MOV.  You aren't going to make it otherwise, stop trying and just say 'Oh.  Oops.  My bad.' and move on.

There's no need to be condescending. We answered his question. I suggested that he keeps an eye on the surge protector as it won't protect forever.

You're shitting on someone whos only experience with surge protectors were the ones I'm designing in college. I'm only speaking from experience, and constructive criticism is always better than being condescending. You piss a lot less people off that way.

You're more likely to get constructive criticism when you're willing to admit your mistakes, rather than continuing to argue when you were incorrect.

Hey! New SIgnature!

I'm supposedly a person on the Internet, but you'll never know if I'm human or not ;)

He suggested I googled it, so I did. And I found what I already knew. I followed his suggestion, and then shat on for it. And I did admit I was wrong when I said that I didn't know about the other types of surge protectors as my experience with them is limited.
