Will a i7 4770 make a big difference over a i5 6400 with a gtx 1060 6GB? or will the gpu be maxed out by both and show no gains? If i bought the i5 6400, i could squeeze an ssd into my budget, or some other £45 upgrade. The price delta is £45, with the i5 costing £120 and the i7 costing £165 (both are used, from Cex with warranty). The motherboard etc is around the same price. I would need a cooler for them both, but no overclocking would take place. this is the i7 build https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/vzMGHN and this is the i5 build (for some reason the i5 4430 costs the same. and the 4460 costs more) https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/BnHvm8

Gaming- BF1, Shadow of Mordor, Valve Games, Minecraft, Mirrors Edge /Catalyst, Portal 1/2, maybe GTA V and far cry primal soon (I play whatever i can find that looks good and i can afford). I am not upgrading, I'm planning a build.

An i5 wouldn't slow a 1060's performance. What I would recommend waiting for Ryzen to hit the market before you upgrade/buy hardware.

It was the other way around. Will a 1060s performance be better with an i7? in the games i listed above

Still, that doesn't change the fact you should wait and see what Ryzen is like.

As for how it performs, you can go to YouTube and there should be videos of each combination. Just see how the framerate plays out, and you'll have your answer.

An i7 will always fare better with games. Although an i5 with a better GPU, i.e. paired with a 1070 would ultimately give you a better experience.

I can't afford a gtx 1070 unless i buy a pentium g4560 or x4 845 (£40-65 cpus) and the motherboards have to be cheap too (so no i7 first gen)

If memory serves, the overclocking functionality on that (and many other H81, B85, H87 boards) is only for the Pentium G3258.

Even if the board can, the 4770 can't.

This is how I think it works.  Some entry level boards have a form of overclocking that is built into the motherboard bios.  For MSI it's OCgenie.  I think it slightly changes the voltage or base clock to give you a 100mhz boost or something like that.  It's nowhere near the same thing as having a Z series board to change the k multiplier on a cpu.

As for the original question, I would definitely take the 4770 over the 6400 in most cases, but both cpus can handle a 1060 no problem.  Having the 6400 means you'll be on a newer platform and have a little more room to upgrade in the future if you want.

It's subjective.  I would say it can, but it really depends on your needs and expectations.  Software requirements are always changing so sometimes it's hard to see that far ahead.  But given the history of CPUs as of 5 years ago, chances are you will be fine.

Case in point, sandy bridge i7s still does kind of ok today in AAA games, and it's a 6 year old cpu.  Haswell is now 2.5 years old.

I think I'll go with that then. Thanks
