3820K vs 4770 for gaming

Guest

Should i buy a (both used) i7 4770 for £165, a B85 motherboard for £50, and a stock cooler for £3, or a i7 3820k for £65, a used X79 motherboard off ebay for £145 and a hyper 212 evo? Which would give better performance in games (with a rx 480 8gb in 1080p/1440p). I know haswell is a better platform for upgrades but... idk. I can overclock the i7 3820k so.....

The 4770 would give you a small amount of better performance, but get whats cheaper.

4770 is definitely better.

even when the 3820k is overclocked? also here https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B85M-G43.html#hero-overview it says this motherboard supports overclocking, does it? is it regular or blck, and i thought you needed z87 to overclock haswell

the motherboard should support overclocking, and so should the CPU.

if you overclock, then it should be better than the 4770.

But I don't see a 3820K on intel ARK, so does it exist??

Yep. It's a old x79 chip. All x79 mobos overclock , like x99

but not all X79 CPUs overclock.

I'm not sure that a K sku of the 3820 exists.

Well I'll probably go haswell anyhoo. But that MSI motherboard says it supports overclocking, so I can upgrade to a 4690k if I want .I think it will work but IDK

B85 doesn't support overclocking.

But neither does the 3820, so the haswell is better than the sandy bridge because of higher clockspeed and better IPC

OK. That motherboard says it supports overclocking on the gigabyte site tho, and apparently some b85 support overclocking

I could get an i5 4430 or 4460 with a 8gb 480/ 6gb 1060 (instead of a 4GB 480) would that be better

nah not really.

if you could get a cheap 8gb RX480 it would be best, but it's not necessary

The 3820 can be overclocked thoough only through bclk.

The 4770 will offer a small singletreaded bump over the 3820 but overall the 3820 will still be more powerful. If possible I recommend a 3930K or a Xeon E5 1620/1650/1660 since they all have unlocked multipliers. They are typically cheaper than their i7 counterparts for some reason. Make sure your motherboard supports them first (sometimes it will be unofficially supported).

If you opt for the Sandybridge-E then the 212 evo will not be enough to cool it with an overclock and will strugle at stock. Take it from someone who has tried. SB-E is super power hungery and kicks off a lot of heat.

Intel Xeon 1650 V0 (4.4GHz @1.4V), ASRock X79 Extreme6, 32GB of HyperX 1866, Sapphire Nitro+ 5700XT, Silverstone Redline (black) RL05BB-W, Crucial MX500 500GB SSD, TeamGroup GX2 512GB SSD, WD AV-25 1TB 2.5" HDD with generic Chinese 120GB SSD as cache, x2 Seagate 2TB SSHD(RAID 0) with generic Chinese 240GB SSD as cache, SeaSonic Focus Plus Gold 850, x2 Acer H236HL, Acer V277U be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4, Logitech K120, Tecknet "Gaming" mouse, Creative Inspire T2900, HyperX Cloud Flight Wireless headset, Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

I'll opt for locked haswell then, i can't afford a beefier cooler with the prices for x79 boards
