Preface: First PC Build, am noob, send halp.

1.  I'm looking to spend up to $2,000 US

2.  The system will be used for digital audio workstations/music production (Digital Performer 9, ableton, MAX MSP, Cuebass) and to store the sound libraries for those programs. It will also be used for video editing and gaming..of course.

3. I plan on using 3 monitors, I don't need anything too over the top as far as resolution, 1080 is fine, but I would like the color to be quality.

4. I have the mouse and keyboard I need, but would be in the market for some studio reference speakers and a DAC.

5. I'm building this because I'm graduating from college and I'm used to having access to pretty good computers to do work on and I will need my own to work now that I have graduated.

*I prefer intel and I'm willing to go a bit over the budget to have a quality system. I'd also like it to run as cool and quiet as possible.

Many thanks!

For a high performance system - I'd wait. AMD is releasing their high end architecture named 'Ryzen' in around two weeks, and the prices are insanely competitive compared to Intel's high end architecture at the moment.

idk

get a 1080 strix and downgrade to a 32gb kit of black ripjaws v if you don't want rgb ram, cpu cooler, mobo and gpu - get a nzxt hue and aer kit if you want full rgb - note, the same build in performance can be done for 300 less but you're paying for the aesthetics

Is it for 1080p video production also? And are you a hardcore gamer that needs more than a 60Hz monitor? Also, will you be overclocking any of the parts?

In the list I have elaborated on why I have chosen some of the parts.

If you need any help or have any questions feel free to reply.

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JMk4Gf
Price breakdown by merchant: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JMk4Gf/by_merchant/

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-7700 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($308.74 @ OutletPC) - I chose the non-k version of the Kaby-Lake i7 because you are not overclocking and because it is great for multitasking and video + audio rendering at 1080p. -
  • Motherboard: Asus STRIX B250F GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($129.99 @ Jet)
  • Memory: G.Skill TridentZ RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($129.99 @ Newegg) - 16GB of RAM is all you will need to enjoy even AAA titles. It is also good for your video & audio editing needs. Plus you will have 2 DIMM slots open so you can also put 2 more RAM Sticks in later down the road (must be the same exact RAM to function properly). -
  • Storage: Kingston HyperX Fury 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($57.21 @ Amazon) - This will be your boot drive. A boot drive is where you store all of your computer's system files so that it can run properly such as the OS and System32. You can also store your video & audio editing programs on here for quick and fast access. I chose a Solid State Drive (SSD) as your boot drive because it faster than a traditional Hard Disk Drive (HDD). Also, if you want a game storage SSD or file storage SSD then you can always buy one and put it in the second 2.5" drive cage as the case that I have selected has two. -
  • 2x Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($139.60 @ OutletPC) - One drive will be for your games and basic programs and the other will be for file and archive storage. If you ever need more storage then don't worry as the case I have selected has 6 3.5" drive cages. Meaning you can add 4 more drives. -
  • Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB Strix Video Card  ($309.88 @ OutletPC) - The GTX 1060 6GB is great for playing most games at 1080p at 60FPS. Meaning that you will have great video quality for your video production. -
  • Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe ATX Full Tower Case  ($149.99 @ Jet)
  • Power Supply: EVGA BQ 600W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($66.13 @ Jet)
  • Optical Drive: Asus BW-16D1HT Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer  ($74.89 @ OutletPC) - I picked this optical drive because I felt with what you asked for you might need to write to a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray disc. -
  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit  ($88.58 @ OutletPC)
  • Sound Card: Asus STRIX RAID DLX 24-bit 192 KHz Sound Card  ($216.38 @ Amazon) - Since you are into audio/music production I thought it would be good to add a sound card in as on-board sound from the motherboard can have electrical interference. This sound card will help reduce the interference and overall improve the audio quality of plugged in devices. -
  • 3x Monitor: Asus VP228H 21.5" 1920x1080 60Hz Monitor  ($327.00 @ Best Buy)

Total: $1998.38
