So I ran across this and the method seems to be pretty straight forward and after 18months it seems to be fairly well documented.  I run an i7 4930K on an Asus X79 board, frankly, I could see this board going to it's 4th or 5th birthday as my main workstation so long as it gets other upgrades like GPUs.  NVMe has interested me and that's how I came across this.  I think that patching my UEFI to boot NVMe is something I'll give a shot later probably around the summer, but I was wondering if anyone had any experiences of their own and could comment now.

There are modded Bios for ASUS boards. 

I updated my old rampage IV with this BIOS

It works good. Only the 4k is slower than normal because CPU officially does not support this.

You can use the PCIe slot x8 in X79 Boards  with an original ASUS Adapter, you don't need m.2 SLot.

Good thing my Ivy Bridge i7 4930K offers up to 40 PCIE 3.0 lanes and the Asus P9X79 LE has two 16 lane 3.0 slots and a third 8x slot (Mechanically 16x, electrically 8) then, huh? :P

I had a 3820k with pcie 2.0 Lanes

It was maybe the reason because of low 4k values.

But I used the third PCIe Slot too

 

Just read the ROG forum. There are a lot of people that experienced with that...

I imagine that would be the case.  You do get a lot less bandwidth on 2.0 though it'd still outclass an SSD.  But yeah, my board may be X79, three of the slots speeds are CPU dependent, so with Sandy Bridge you get PCIE 2.0, but with Ivy Bridge it's PCI-E 3.0.  (The 1X slots are still 2.0)
