Dead computer

I have a Packard bell computer, It won't boot, I believe its a POST problem.

Specs: 

i5 3340

8GB DDR3 Generic RAM

1TB HDD

Nvidia GT620

 

Tried with a RM850i power supply so it's not a power supply issue.

 

I think its a motherboard issue, Anywhere good to buy a new motherboard for this system (Not going to keep the case)

 

Problem:

Switches on fine, No display, CPU fan spins up and doesn't spin back down like normal.

Mobo is an Acer branded board

Ermmm...well I can't find any on Amazon, ebuyer, OCUK, scan, AWD-IT, CCL ect. ect. so I doubt you'll find any new here in the UK

Are you sure that it is not one of the components?  Try turning it on each time after the following steps:

 

1. Unplug Hard Drive

2. Unplug GPU

3.  Use only 1 memory stick, swapping them.

Done this a few times, still won't work.

 

It has booted a few times randomly, but when i turn it off again it won't boot back up.

Here is the best thing you can do right now. Sell the CPU, PSU and RAM on eBay and get something else.

I actually want the computer (Mainly for a server), is it worth doing that, could you suggest what i could get for it all (I can't access ebay) and what more recent components (To make a complete system) i could buy for the money i could get from it? (I do have some money i can put into it so it doesn't have to be perfect)

The CPU: Around $70

The PSU: Around $15

RAM: ARound $25

Then you can get a G3900, which costs $50 and a new motherboard

Looking more towards a quad core (Or more) system for VMs etc

Since i am in the UK

£50ish (I can put more to the side if needed) plus what the components get me.

 

Since i have an RM 850i and a Define R4 (Waiting for my main system to go in) Forget the case and PSU for now

For around $160, you can get an X5650 (6-core) and an X58 motherboard. However, if you want to spend as little money as possible, get a used LGA 1155 motherboard from eBay.

Is that the best option? (Since i don't have unlimited money)

Or is the 6 core any better (Also does it need ECC since i will have to buy that.)

This 6 core CPU isn't much slower than an overclocked 6700K:

It doesn't need ECC. Which option is best is up to you!

I don't have the ability to check ebay for one of em, but that seems like a good idea (Since the PC will end up in a rack mount case with some "Lighter" server duties.
