You're just embarrassing yourself.

  • $400 PC.
  • Minecraft- CPU intensive title here.
  • He does not want to incorporate used hardware.
  • He is NOT LOOKING TO OVERCLOCK
  • Easy-to-build- Intel's stock cooler is the easiest cooler in the world to install.
  • Most powerful computer possible for basic tasks (on his budget). A much faster CPU with vastly superior single-threded performance like the G4560 would make a night-and-day difference.

The Pentium G4560 is on par with the Core i3 6100- faster when paired with DDR4 2400 memory. It's a hell of a lot faster than the FX-6300, and it's $40 cheaper.

An RX 470 may be overkill for casual titles, but it makes for the best possible combination with a G4560, and if he ever wants to play triple-A titles or have a very future-proof configuration, he won't even have to upgrade.

Fitting in a better CPU at the cost of GPU power is a bad idea. The only significant improvements will come with an upgrade to a Core i5 6500 or a similar CPU, and they're over $100 more. This is the best value. This is the best configuration for the money unless/until Zen beats it.

Yeah, but he isn't going to be running them simultaneously on a $400 budget via virtualization. The performance will be abysmal with both an FX-6300 and a Pentium G4560. He'll either get three stupidly slow cores each, or one fast hyperthreaded core. Also, the G4560 is cheaper, and more importantly, has an upgrade path all the way up to a Core i7 7700k, which is more than capable of running VMs simultaneously.

what about waiting for ryzen, their cheapest chips will apparently be true quad cores ?

Yeah, that was in my first post. There'll probably be a $120-150 CPU+motherboard combo to take down i5s.

I considered waiting, but for £200 i coul get a used i7 4770 and a new mobo , so i'm just buyin that

That's pretty good value, but there's a chance Zen will be better. The 8-core 16-thread chips are starting at 230 pounds for 3.7 GHz, and even the cheapest motherboards have OC support. You might get six hyperthreaded cores for that kind of money.

I would recommend checking the local recycled computer store. Many times they will have prebuilt desktops where you only need to add a graphics card and you're good to go. For instance, I just checked out the local store where I'm at while on vacation and found an i5-4590, 8GB ram, brand new 240GB kingston SSD dell computer with windows 7 64 pro for 325 bucks. All it needs is a good Graphics card and possibly a Power supply upgrade and it is ready to go. Note this is in California where the electronics stores tend to be a bit more expensive. If were back home I could probably get that for around 270. Also got a couple cables I need for like 5 bucks each, vs 8-17 online or 24-30 in stores.

Your local computer recycling place can be a treasure trove if you know what to look for. Highly recommend checking it out!
