I'm considering attempting to build a server to back up data off of our computers (there's 4 with around 1tb of data total right now) and to store movies (this will be rather substantial because I plan on putting my entire movie collection on it) I would like to give access to family members remotely, they're give or take 40 miles away, I'm not entirely sure if that's possible or not part of the reason I'm here. I would also like to be able to be able to watch content off of something like a roku or a smart tv, also not sure if that's possible. I want to initially build it cheaply, and upgrade parts over time to have better performance, the current configuration I'm thinking of is this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sRYssJ. I would also like to know if it would be possible to set up the server to back up the contents of the 2tb drive on to the 4tb drive nightly, the idea between the two would be that all of the media will be stored on the 2tb drive and the backups on the 4tb drive. Whenever these become nearly full the idea would be to replace them with larger drives in a raid array but for now to get going I don't want to spend more than $750 if I don't have to.

Plex or another equivalent video streaming/content library server.

Why have you put a 10Gb network card in this build? As it stands with the other parts in the configuration you'll not be able to sustain much more than 1Gbps, both the CPU and HDDs are incapable of much more than 1Gbps.

If you really want 10Gb by used NICs off ebay, they are very cheap.

This with WD Blues will work fine.

Basically I would remove the 10Gb card from the build, swap all the HDDs for 3 WD blues and a small SSD boot and upgrade the CPU but only if you want to run something like Plex.

blues are not good for having more than 1 next to it. a nas or server HDD would be recommended

True but 3 isn't a lot and you can use rubber grommets on the screws holding the HDDs in. The price increase from Blues to Reds is a heck of a lot, particularly when buying multiple disks, without any significant benefits in a small home setup.

If they were going to be mounted in a server HDD caddy and put in a server chassis with 8+ then yea really would advise WD Reds.

Okay so I've read through all the suggestions and revised the build with this, https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NDPZr7, note I actually have a spare corsair 200R case, and I know the total capacity will only be 4tb in this configuration but as it gets closer to full I will swap or add drives with a larger capacity. If I set it up for plex would I still be able to partition part of it to act as a different drive for file storage? Also does anyone know of any good tutorials for setting up a plex server? Also worth mentioning, at some point whenever upgrading is worth it for my pc the server will probably get my 6700K and my msi z170 titanium board.
