About a month ago I built my first PC with an i7 6800K and a Corsair H115i. I knew a powerful CPU would need a hefty cooler, so I thought I was good, but the CPU idles (0-3% usage) between 48-58 degrees Celsius, average is around 53-56. Under heavy load (rendering 4K color graded footage in Premiere, 85-100% usage), temps reach upwards of 90-100 degrees, average 96-98. It has yet to shut down on me due to overheating, but this still seems insane to me. I don't understand why it gets so hot under load with such a hefty cooler, and why it idles so high as well. Does this CPU just run really hot, or am I missing something?

Also - sometimes when I start up, it freezes on a screen that says overclocking has failed, even though I have yet to try overclocking this processor. I have to go into the BIOS and then exit for it to finally boot up.

Any help would be appreciated!

This can only be 1 of a few things

You didn't take the plastic cover off the bottom of the heatsink.

Lack of thermal paste, but the pre-applied paste should be more than fine

It's not installed correctly, so it's not making full contact with the chip

Your heatsink isn't connected to the board, so pump might not be on

Idle should be 20-35 depending on ambient temps. Loads with that cooler shouldn't be over 70c

Plastic was definitely taken off. I had to replace the thermal paste, but I re-applied plenty of Arctic MX-4 following the dot method. I made sure it was spread evenly. Pretty sure it's physically installed correctly, but that will be the first thing I check to make sure. I have Corsair Link open and it's showing me the pump RPM, so that's connected, and it's currently in the 2880-2910 range which seems high.

Is there anything else it could be? I think I have all of those bases covered and I've still got high temps.

Any chance I big time lost the silicone lottery and got a chip that's extremely hot and therefore probably can't overclock?
