With the new Z270 boards out and AMD Ryzen planned to be launched in March, I've met some big challenges while planning my computer. So far I've got my case, motherboard, and RAM all at my house, and I'm ordering some more parts, likely the PSU and SSD or HDD, sometime this week. I recently watched a video on NCIX Tech Tips that rumored a higher-end 7700K. If this rumor were true, I'd imagine that the release date would be close to that of Ryzen, and I'd rather not wait that long. The GPU is also another big choice for me. The benchmarks on the GTX 1070 look more than sufficient for me (who is planning on using a 2560x1440 + 1920x1080 setup) for gaming. However, I've not been playing as many games recently. My focus has mainly been steered toward Premiere Pro and other sorts of media. Video production has always been one of my interests, and I'm now getting a good budget to start creating content. The GTX 1080 is in my budget. However, I'm very hesitant to buy one, mainly because of the launch of Vega coming soon, which will probably lower the prices of the NVIDIA lineup. Another factor for me, is the release of a rumored GTX 1080ti. If this card were to launch, I could buy a 1080 for a reduced price, or buy the 1080ti. Either is an option for me right now, but I would like to have some extra money for a microphone setup, so the 1070 has been looking like the card I should buy. Any recommendations, as this is my first build, are welcome and appreciated.

Below, I've embedded my current PC Part Picker List. (Yes, I'm very aware that I probably should have bought an M7 and Crystal 460x)

First of all, the so-called 7740K is not worth waiting for by itself, unless it'll be a 6 core CPU (highly unlikely). Either buy a 7700K or invest in Ryzen.

As far as GPU is concerned, if you see yourself wanting to play at 4K or with VR, waiting for the 1080 TI is the best option. If not, still wait for at least Vega to release, as it will force down pricing for the 1080.

I'm not sure which will come out first, Vega or 1080 TI. But in either case, the price of the 1080 will drop, which makes it a far better value for sub-4K gaming. 1070 will suffice in this regard, but the 1080 will last longer at good visual settings in games.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

My main concern with the rumored CPU is its socket size. I could wait for a potential CPU that never releases, or one that's not on LGA1151. Perhaps I should just wait to buy the CPU for a week or two, just to see if any more news comes out?

I will almost definitely not be playing 4K or VR, but if the 1080's price is expected to drop by a marginal amount, I may as well wait. I do have a 760 on hand, and I'm in no rush for a GPU. I think I should wait until Vega/ti release and then I can compare the cost/performance. The CPU will be a week or two before I have the money to order it, so I suppose I'll wait until then. Thanks for the response.

Waiting until Vega/1080 TI is the best option. The 1080's pricing has been grossly inflated since its release.

And don't worry, I'm waiting along with you :P Currently planning a Skylake-X build later on this year, or Ryzen if it performs as it's hyped out to be.

I'll only get a potential price benefit from that. I've already bought the Z270 board. March isn't too long I guess?

Well maybe see if these new intel cpus are real, wait a month. And if they aren't then buy a 7700k.

Just read they are rumored to be LGA 2066 chips.

Any reason why you didnt opt for X99 6 core for creation?

1440P imo, you should go 1080 if possible, mine is pushing 60 - 100FPS in most games which is the sweet spot.

IF a 1080ti IF it happens cause it's purely rumour and rumour has it that it should have been announced twice already does land then I can bet my hat on it that it won't be until they know the performance of Vega. If they release early they won't wanna gimp the 1080's profit. I would bet it will land directly between 1080 and Titan XP and they will adjust prices to compete with Vega IF vega competes. Remember there's no reason for them to low ball themselves at the high end purely based on rumour, the same happened with 980ti, it had to come in competitive with Fury X on price which meant the 980 had to lower, If Vega doesnt compete with 1080/1080ti, theres no reason to lowball.

I just went with Z270 because it was new. It was a bit of a rushed decision, but I think I'll do okay without a 6 core, considering that I won't be rendering 4K content, probably just 1080p content, and it will be some time before I'm skilled enough to really need something like that. I think I'll be okay, but looking back a 6 core may have been a better option.
