My PC wont POST: New CPU, Old Chipset.

Rohime

Well, i was in my (not so local) PC shop warranty dept today - pccasegear.com

In the 30 minutes or so i was there getting a DOA defective M.2 960 EVO replaced, at least 3 people came in with "New CPU - PC wont POST" problems.

Everyone of them had bought a 7700K and put it into an older generation MoBo - without knowing that the MoBo likely needed a BIOS update first.

i was really surprised at

a) the (apparent) number of people buying 7 Series CPU with prior gen Chipset.

b) the (apparent) lack of awareness of need for BIOS update.

anyone else seeing this ?  (my sample is statistically insignificant - but interesting anyway i thought).

Anyone who cared to properly research it first knows that it may require a bios update. But at the same time, there isn't(as far as i know) any way to check for sure if a motherboard does have the updated bios or not, unless you contact the store and they're able to find out.

While I agree with RKRiley, most of the online stores where I lie stipulate on the product listing if an updated BIOS is needed.

Well, they were smart enough to get same socket. I've seen posts here where socket of mobo and CPU are incompatible.
