Sony 4k TV looks grainy while watching TV and 4k Netflix

Profoundsoup

I got my Sony 930D a few days ago and after doing a few days of testing I have noticed that the picture always seems to be a big grainy. Cable is at 720p resolution and Netflix is 4k but it all seems a big grainy or "filmy". Not sure what to do with this. Any advice?

Could it be the picture mode (my tv has a film grain option)?

Cable is stretching to 4k so it may be pixelated.

Netflix I have no clue

firstly you should rule out "film grain", which is a post-process effect that is intentional in some content. 720p cable will often have some grain but it'll just look a bit blurry on a 4k tv, however that depends on the size of the tv.

if you ruled that out, i suggest looking into the TV's OSD and finding a setting that reduces grain, which the TV will actively do when you enable it.

You have to pay $60/year for Sony 4K+. Comes with two free inputs and a... wait for it... remote!

This sarcastic post was brought to you by Microsoft.

Sony 4K TVs have a tune that runs in the background that goes "Xbox off" every fifteen minutes.

and a PS4 will bring up a blocker on a Samsung TV saying "3rd Party TV has expired... Please Buy a PS4 to continue to or you will be billed 60.00/year like @ARikozuM stated"

I have looked in the OSD and have turned off any film grain or noise options but the same thing.

Play a 4K UHD BluRay movie on your TV and check for graininess. If you still have grain, either your TV is defective, or more likely there's a setting that's been fiddled with / not fiddled with enough. If it looks fine, welcome to the world of low-quality streaming 4K content, courtesy of Netflix and your cable provider. Er. Wait, cable isn't even 1080p these days. :P
