Think I'd rather have a G4560 for now with a Z270 board for upgrading, take the bit of a performance hit now to have a better upgrade path

it's really not too far below the i5 in gaming benchmarks

If you use an Nvidia GPU, which adds cost and hurts longevity of the system. Digital Foundry in another video showed the same AMD DX11 overhead problem is still rearing its head when used with lower end cpus like the G4560. I think overclocking the cpu is a huge waste of money if you're not targeting 100+ fps, because that's when your cpu starts becoming a bottleneck. The build I suggested is much more balanced, and there won't be a need to replace the i5 in it for a few years.

The G4560 is a tremendous cpu for budget buillds (easily the best I have ever seen) but hardware is cheap enough now that $765 even with monitor doesn't necessitate having to skimp too much. The kind of build where I think the G4560 makes sense would be something like this, which would be really nice for Overwatch and CS:GO and still pretty playable for Battlefield 1 while coming in way under budget:

Even with the driver overhead in DX11 it's still over 60fps most of the time and it's on a game by game basis, plus whenever you eventually upgrade your CPU you got the Z270 platform and the 470/480 will fully stretch it legs

plus the 1050ti totally isn't worth getting over an RX 470 at least, the G4560 can handle it just fine

If you buy the i5 from the beginning there is no need to upgrade the cpu for years though. So there is no good reason to throw money at the Z270 platform when on a budget like that. Instead of spending $120 on a board, $70 on a throwaway cpu, $350 on an unlocked i7, and $30 on a cooler (total $570) in an effort to stay relevant for 5 years he could buy a $200 i5 and a $70 board, in 3 years replace it with the new $200 i5 and $70 board, and he'd have a system relevant for say 6 years for a lower price, and he'd never have to game on a cpu bottlenecked system in the beginning. Unlocked chips are great if you're trying to push 100+ fps but I don't think they're a great investment for future proofing. I don't think it's an optimal use of money.

The i5 will be fine, but it's simply overkill for 60hz gaming, and generally speaking it's only about $100 more or so to double your thread count, with an i7 you really will never need to replace it

the point is just to have the option for the i7, rather than being locked down
