So the other day my Windows installation got corrupted somehow and I needed to backup some files off my PC before I reinstalled Windows. I found out that Ubuntu can natively read NTFS volumes so I downloaded the latest 16.10 64-Bit desktop version and burned it to a DVD. I ran it live and copied my files to a USB drive but after I wanted to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. Only problem is Ubuntu refuses to work on my system.

I have a 3570K @ 4.2Ghz and a GTX 970 along with 16GB of ram overclocked to 2400Mhz. I know my system specs are more than high enough to run ubuntu but whenever I try to use it I just get a black screen. I read online that its an issue with the Nvidia driver but I can't fix it. I'm a total noob when it comes to Linux, hell I don't even know how to install software. I tried to use a nomodeset boot flag and it gave me video except now I can't login. When I try and login the screen flashes for a sec and I return to the login menu.

I would really like to use Ubuntu or any Linux distro for that matter because it seems pretty cool and I would like to use it just incase I find a use for it or just wanna tinker with something other than Windows.

Any ideas?

I tried that and it did nothing. nomodeset seems to fix the issue but then I can't login.

Can you do Ctrl+Alt+F2 with nomodeset on?

If that doesn't work, could be possible that the Ubuntu image was corrupted in some way, or something's wrong with 16.10. Try 16.04 LTS if all else fails.

Well ATM I'm trying to install it but I can't get past hitting install. I hit E to add boot flags buti don't know how to add them manually.

I used elementaryOS on my old msi gs60 6qe.

I removed 'quiet' and 'splash' and added nomodeset at the end of the line beginning with Linux.

When you eventually get the install done, win+T and run

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

That should get the ball rolling, i had a similar issue with arch and Xubuntu.
