A (hopefully) simple question. Which do you guys think is better for gaming: a larger screen size or a larger pixel count? Obviously the ideal is a monitor with both but, since most of us are on a budget (and a 27" 2K TN panel is outrageously expensive at $600+), I'd like to know where you think the best value can be found.

Depends on what games you played. Example first person shooting games like csgo & etc will benefit from 120 / 144Hz monitor whereby other games like Civ6 will benefit (not really benefit but awesome to be played) on bigger screen with higher Hz not really affecting it that much.

So back to the question. What games do you normally play.

Depends on how much space I have. I love more size than screen but space does not allow it :(

He is asking for screen size and resolution not refresh rate

I know. But what if he only plays CSGO and BF1 like my friend does. Then I would only recommend higher Hz monitor ... :(

Honestly at least to me a 40ish inch 1080p TV will give a great experience, since I am more of a single player campaign person, gaming on the TV with a game pad is great for immersion, the big screen does have this in its favour.

I personally feel 60fps to be decent enough for slow paced third person games, however when it  comes down to the first person games then the monitor proves to be the best solution, like I use a 75hz IPS ultra-wide will give enhanced experience thanks to the higher refresh rate and image quality... but then playing from the couch/bed becomes unlikely...

@VolkA Oh god, do you have a year? xD

I do play a few multiplayer fps games but I play them for enjoyment and am not generally competitive (if that makes a difference). I also really enjoy more relaxed games that don't really need refresh rates that high, games like Skyrim and SC2.

Oh no, I don't play CS:GO. And while I own BF1 and pick it up from time to time I don't enjoy it enough to spend the money on a monitor to be the best at it.

That's a fair point. Do you notice any difference between the response time of a TN and IPS panel? I've noticed that gaming monitors with IPS screens are generally much cheaper (probably because of the slower response time) so that might be a good way for me to go.

I can only notice when it comes down to eSports, LoL, CS:GO, TF2 and such... Nothing gives me more anger than hear my awp shoot in time but due to video lag I die first, mseconds do make a difference in these games.

Now on single player campaigns like The Witcher 3, Assassins Creed and so on, playing on a 60hz LED 1080p TV (40inch) I honestly feel no issue what so ever in the regards of response times...

Guess I'm sticking with TN then. I only game in once place so all my games would use the same screen.

Hmmm. For me, I would prefer a bigger screen. Bigger is better (that's what she said). Games I play currently are mainly Civ 6 anyway.

Screen size should be chosen accordingly by how far you sit away from the Screen ^^

If your Eyes only have a distance of 50cm to the screen, then you shouldn't bother with 27".

Plus, on 27" the monitor kinda MUST have 1440p resolution. i would NEVER get a 1080p Monitor with 27". Except youre doing nothing but Gaming, and you sit over 1 meter away.

So yea. If you stick to 1080p, stick to 24".

If you go for 1440p, you can go with 24" up to 27".

What is your Budget, and what GPU do you use? With nvidia, i can recommend the Dell S2417DG, i own it since today. A little bit tweaking for the Brightness, contrast, colors, and Gamma, and it looks quite nice besides my U2414H ips Monitor.

as many have pointed out, it always comes down to screen size and viewing distance, the resolution you should go for is pretty much defined by them. i use a 3840x2160 28" monitor and i sit about 1 meter away from it, and i think from this perspective it takes up just the right amount of my field of view, and has just the right pixel density that everything looks razor sharp and crispy. And as a bonus if i lean forward when playing shooters, the screen takes up my entire field of vision and still has a high enough DPI that it doesn't get annoying. Granted though, 4k monitors are expensive, but i imagine a 28" 1440p monitor could be pretty cheap these days right ?
