FreeNAS Power Consumption Optimizing??

So i need help setting up my NAS to run at lowest power consumption as possible.

 

My usage:

It will run 24/7 ish, by that i mean it will auto shutdown on a schedule when I'm at work and start up when I get home from pre set times which i believe i can do in bios but if not it can be done inside FreeNAS i believe.

It will be used to store media and just basic storage, and i send my PC's backup to it but speed is not my concern more redundancy which it has. it will only be ever used by 1-2 people at a time. (that i can see for the foreseeable future anyways)

I do use plex server on it but again i hardly use that maybe on weekend if i sit down to watch film.

(Hope this info help if you need more just ask :) )

 

What i have already done:

Under clocked my cpu and turned all but one core off and turned off hyper threading.

Set up my disk standby time and APM (Not sure if this is correct but i set Standby as 30 and APM as Level 1)

 

I will be upgrading the PSU to a lower watt and more efficient one

 

What else can I do on software level??

 

Any advise is great cheers.

If it's a modern CPU, then there's no real point in downclocking/disabling cores or anything like that. Regardless it will sit at idle and consume minimal power. 

 

Also, the cost of buying a new PSU will likely far outweigh any savings from a higher efficiency.

not true yes if i was buy mega bucks PSU but I'm not just standard decent efficient seasonic about £40

Actually, very true. Let's assume you run your server 24/7. If it's a modern system, it will consume 70-100w. Let's assume 100w and let's assume you pay $0.13/kwh. . 100*24*365*.13/1000 = $114 @ 100% efficiency.

 

If you use a 500w 80+ bronze, you'll get around 83% efficiency. $114/.83 = $137. 

If you use a 350w 80+ bronze, you'll get around 85% effienciey. $114/.85 = $133.

If you use a 200w 80+ Gold PSU, you'll get around 92% efficiency. $114/.92 = $122.

If you use a 350w 80+ Gold PSU, you'll get around 90%~ efficiency. $114/.9 = $126. 

 

It would take about five or more years for the higher efficiency to pay off -- and that's if you run it 24/7. If you're disabling features and turning it off for half the day (when you're at work/asleep), then it will take even longer.

try a 600w with no efficient rating just some random crap that came in my machine when i brought it i dotn even think its 80 plus rated you no that plan white sticker one lol

That's just garbage and shouldn't even be on the table or in the system for half a second (or in your post since it should never be in a NAS because it's crap).

well i know, that why i need new one lmao sorry should mention my budget is tight but dw upgrading to 300w seasonic 80 plus bronze txf psu its like £40 so ye needs to be down and i think both agress this will improve my electric bill over that shit xD but ye i do agree with you on from bronze to gold not much point in trying to save on ur electric bill :P

 

but ye any other settings i can tweak on my freenas?

No idea, it's not worth the time/hassle as far as I'm concerned -- so I haven't done it. 

 

But I would recommend asking on the FreeNAS forums since they'll know better how to minimize power consumption.

ye was think of doing that but fought give LTT a shot as we are quite smart on here xD ha

I use a i3-6100T for my FreeNAS setup as my primary file server. Without drives at idle the entire system runs about 8-10w. Peak it's just shy of 50w. Peak usage with 20x 6TB Reds it only uses about 100w. 

 

So my point is that I agree with @djdwosk97 that more modern and appropriately spec'd hardware is your answer.

Undervolting.  Undervolt it and you'll reduce it's power consumption, which also means less heat, which also means less effort/noise from the cooler.

Just be aware that starting and stopping drives so frequently will wear them out faster than leaving them spinning/idle power.
