to be 100% honest I have had experience with APU's (and still currently using one) and can say if you get a quad core version with a good clock speed and use a separate graphics card then you shouldnt see a problem in some games being played at acceptable levels. but relying solely on the APU for both CPU and GPU purposes will lead to underwhelming performance.

I use an A6 6400K and for a dual core it is reliable and plays a few games like BF4 (720p med/low at around 30fps) and even at those setting expect to have alot of stuttering and really long load times. on average it takes at least 2-3 mins to load a map on BF4, and even more in some cases on arma 3.

so again if you are planning to use a separate GPU then i would advise against newer titles using an APU.

Also on another note, if you do decide to go for an APU then your upgrade path is pretty much non-existent as FM2+ socket type is really poor for options for motherboards and the boards I have seen mostly for APU's arent designed for anything gaming unless its super low end

even the a10 is a mediocre quad-core with a bad IPC compared to 2nd/3rd gen i series processors.

You might be able to play some games on 720p with medium settings or something like that with an AMD APU. Something like ARK might be a struggle even if you modify the graphics. I would rather pick up a G4560 and a RX 460/GTX 1050.

not worth buying new at this price range imo

idk

Im looking to build my younger brother a build and wondering if an apu can run popular new games at least at low settings with decent fps (playable fps) on titles like overwatch, ark, new title like For Honor.

Wait for AM4 APUs launching soon if your budget is under $300

Here's last gen APU benhcmarks, it's not too bad considering it's price at the time, DDR4 and other improvements are going to help them a ton

Here's an APU system, I highly recommend waiting for AM4 to build an APU system

The issue is that you have no upgrade path, and for like 50-100 dollars more, you get like 400% more performance in a Pentium G4560 + RX 460 build

APU's have always been a weaker chip because it being CPU and GPU on one chip. like some of the other guys have said on here i think the best option is to buy something from intel, or if thats out of your price range then either buy a decent AM3+ chip with separate gpu, or wait until ryzen/vega is released and see what options you will have.

As i said in my previous post about FM2+ socket, it has no upgrade path as you are restricted to either a low end APU, or something like an x4 860K which is still pretty weak for being a quad core cpu.

sorry if this is crappy news but APU's arent designed to be a gaming orientated chip as they are too low power as the igpu is always lower performance than a separate gpu.

The chip i have has radeon HD8470D 768mb and it is weaker than a 5000 series discreet gpu from amd so it really isnt gaming capable unless you can live with playing most games on low setting and barely hitting 30 fps at 720p. I wish i had more cash at the time of building my system as i would have went with a more powerful setup but alas i could only afford what i have and it is pretty mediocre as a gaming system, its great for watching 1080p vids and general web browsing/media player but nothing more sadly.

any igpu is "shit" for gaming..

igpu is good for normal usage you know of the computer, for gaming, you need a dedicated card :P

Unles u just want to "run" the game
