I am interested in making movies as a hobby in my spare time and I am looking for a camera around £400-£600. Don't know weather I should go 1080p or 4k. Having a time-lapse feature would be nice. Size is not really an issue. Which cameras should I be looking at? Thank you in advance.

Any other similar cameras from canon/sony?

Sony's eqivilent I would say is the A6300. Or thats the one with comparable video specs. Canon doesn't really have anything like the G7, maybe the 80d could be good but you won't get 4k then.

Any reason you want sony or canon?

Consider getting a camcorder.  You can get a decent one for $500-600.

Just wondering if they have an equivalent. Can't go wrong with the Panasonic G7?

Can you give me some examples of camcorders?

Before I start listing cameras I would recommend, let's make you think about a few things:

  • Say for example you're going to be filming a 5 minute trailer for your future movie.
  • Aside from having a script, actors/actresses, props, locations, makeup, etc.
  • What equipment do you already have in terms of filming gear?
    • Mics?
    • Lights?
    • Camera supports?

Your stated maximum budget is GBP 600, do you really want to spend all that on just a camera?  If you do that, do you have extra cash to buy other necessary accessories because they can just as well cost you another GBP 600 or more?

Don't have any filming gear and I am still not sure weather to go for 1080p or 4k. I might spend more on this hobby in the future if I do enjoy it. I don't think I should be spending more than £400-600 if I have never done anything like this before.

I have not personally used the G7 but it is said to be very good and can usally be found for good prices. It's like the GH4's little brother really. Sony's closest eqivilent is the A6300 imo and that one costs 1000 which is way out of budget for you.

I would look after a good deal on the G7, however you may find yourself having a smaller budget for acessorices then which may want you to reconsider the G7 (even though its the best way to get 4k for decent price imo).

Lightning is of course important, but you can do a lot of diy solutions if you do some basic lightning while learning I think.

Go for 1080p, with a camera like this:

Your budget is limited, so instead of choosing a camera that works best only with the use of extra accessories, a camcorder like this offers multiple advantages:

  • Optical power zoom
  • Built in quality mic
  • Built in image stabilization optimized for video
  • Actually designed for shooting video

Use a camcorder like this to learn the art of story telling, this is much more important than whether you film in 4K or not or you use more expensive cameras.  If this is only for a hobby, you shouldn't spend much more than the price of the camera.
