Intel NUC Small Form Factor PC

Dredgy

I've been looking for a cheap, but effective way to replace a restaurant Point of Sale system for a while now, and the Intel NUC seemed to be the best solution for me.

Summary

Pros

  • Small form factor
  • Price
  • Configurable storage and memory
  • Price
  • VESA mountable, included VESA bracket
  • Good IO for both consumer and enterprise uses.
  • Price

Cons

  • Fan noise - would not be comfortable with it on my desk without headphones.
  • Doesn't include any RAM - for the bottom-tiered Celeron model I'd be fine with 4GB of RAM soldered in.

Conclusion

Haven't built my point-of-sale system yet, but am confident this will provide an elegant solution when mounted to a touchscreen. Noise is annoying, but forgivable at the price. Stable system.

You can get slower fan less models if this is just a pos system. There also much cheaper. So look at all in one's.

I got the cheapest model on the market in Australia.

All in one's were out of budget. The cheapest usable all in one with a touchscreen was $1000. Even with a UPS, the system I'm building costs less than $700.

Stable system

My little NUC is 99% reliable. For some reason or another, my NUC decides to restart about once a month. I cannot figure out what is triggering the restart either. I'm using Windows 8 with all updates disabled. Otherwise, it's a great product.

That's because Win10 makes you reboot every other week from updates :D

I'm running it in a business environment with no Internet at the moment. Has been solid for a week, works wayyyyy better than I was intending.
