Ok im still a little confused after watching linus videos on SSDs. too many standards to keep track of. They have the 2.5 inch drives that connect with SATA, ok i got that. Dont care about the other standards since they dont exists really or wont last except the next 2 which M.2 and the PCIe ones ( not sure about this PCIe one until someone answers me) Intel has the 2.5 inch drives that use SATA , then M.2 drives which use an M.2 connector on the board or if your board doesnt have one you can get a card that goes in a PCIe slot that will take ur M.2 card . then theres the PCIe card looking drives on their card. Is the PCIe card an actual SSD or is it just an adapter type thing for M.2 meaning the only 2 types of SSDs i need to worry about are the 2.5 and M.2 ones . or is it 3 meaning 2.5 , M.2 , and one that goes into a PCIe slot being a drive only and not an adapter for an m.2 like in Linus' videos

M.2 drives can be either sata or pcie drives based on the onboard controller.  Think of it like mini displayport and thunderbolt 2 ports,  physically they look the same,  but they are different electrical standards. 2.5 sata drives are all the same.

m.2 drives scan use a pcie slot then ? or only an m.2 slot

some connect to the m.2 slot but use  a certain amount of pcie lanes

ok i figured it out after alot of googling. i dont think you guys got my question.
1) there are 2.5 inch drives that connect via sata.
2)m.2 solutions that can connect via an m.2 connector or an adapter that plugs into a pcie slot .
3) 2.5 inch drives that connect to an m.2 connector via a cable
4) last , an add in card which connects via a PCIe slot .... ( not the same as number 2 )

ended up answering this one myself ....
