Hello all,

Does anyone know the minimum requirements to use VLC? the reason i'm asking is becouse i want to re-use my old laptop as a video player but i keep having tons of artifacting.

This is the laptop i'm talking about: Samsung NP-N110 Intel Atom N270 (single core) with 1GB DDR2 ram, i know is a realy weak pc but i'm sure it could handle video back in its days.

I have installed Windows 10 32bit, ram usage is about 700MB at idle, i have read that it might be becouse the single core cant decode fast enough or perhaps i need more ram.

Depends on what you want to watch, VLC will only use the resources it needs for the file it's playing. From what I know, an n270 doesn't have what it takes for 1080p movies. DVD resolution video should be feasible though.

As for ram usage, install linux. Windows isn't designed to run on low memory systems and I wouldn't recommedn spending money on an upgrade, even if you could get to what I would consider the minimum of 4gb for windows.

I used to have a netbook with an N270, and it was generally ok for moderate-bitrate 720p in VLC.

ubuntu is too resource heavy, go for something lighter like debian

Just tested 480p, it works as intended but 720p has hiccups sometimes, could a lighter OS increase performance?

Yes, but don't expect miracles.
