So I had this problem a while ago and I fixed it with a tomshardware page here:聽http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1664109/black-screen-installing-graphics-card-bit-noob.html and the solution worked for me, but I always had problems with display if I turn my computer off. 聽I know the card works cause I've had it working for a while it just won't display if I turn my computer off and on (it undos what I had to make it work). 聽Anyone have a more permanent solution?

Over the weekend I bought a GeForce GT 640 2GB 128-bit DDR3 card and a 530w PSU to go along with the upgrade to my system. Upon installation of both devices (every power cable was plugged back into its appropriate spot, as well as the card), I booted my pc up to get started only to find no feedback. Just a black screen and no beeping to indicate improper installation. I opened my tower back up to make sure everything was connected properly and it was then I rebooted and still, nothing. I connected my VGA cable into the integrated graphics and still received no feedback so I decided to remove the card. Upon removal, I was able to receive a signal from my integrated graphics. So I'm lost, what caused this?

I wondered if it was my motherboard that was maybe out of date, but it seems like that isn't actually possible. Then I also figured it could be my CPU that is out of date, but I'm not sure if that's possible either.

My specs:
Model: HP Pavilion A6500F
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual E2220 @ 2.40GHz
RAM: 4 GB
PSU: 530w

if removing the gpu causes the system to run normally, then the problem lies with the gpu (your monitor probably wont run on the iGPU if u plugged in a dGPU, unless you changed some settings in the bios)

i would recommend first checking the power cables, are they connected correctly on gpu and psu sides (if the gt640 even needs external power)

also, i tried looking up your cpu to see how many pcie lanes it has, but i cant find anything from intel's website so... i dunno if that may the problem

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I'm using an rx 460 btw but my cpu supports it I think its a bios problem that I cant find.

With HP pre-builds, you sometimes have to switch to Legacy mode in Bios so that it can recognise the hardware.

16 pcie lanes it should be fine I'll check the bios

oh so that tomshardware wasnt your thread? i thought it was o.O

anyway, from what i understand

your pc have a black screen when you turn it on, and you have to do the steps in tom's hardware page to get it to work again

and then it's back to black screen if you turn it off and on again after getting it to work.

from what i can guess, it's probably your gpu software. windows update is messing around with it every time you turn it on

where did you get your gpu's driver? did you download the latest version from amd's website?

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I tried to find the gigabyte drivers but I don't think anything worked. I'll attach the page I tried to use

try and obtain the drivers from amd's website instead, they normally have newer drivers compared to gigabyte

So once I download the drivers I should be able to just put the card in and聽boot it from the card with no problems?

download and install them, then see if it fixes the issue you're facing

if not then we'll see where to go from there

So when I put in my gpu and start it up (I installed the drivers) the igpu is working and displaying but the graphics card is not. The graphics card is working and spinning, but no display. Should I try disabling the igpu in device manager or in the bios?

you should try enabling dgpu instead of disabling igpu, check the bios

just to be sure, your RX460 doesnt need external power cables right?

My rx 460 does not need external power. 聽Just mobo pci-e power. 聽So, I just restarted my computer to get into the bios, and no visuals. 聽Should I try and take out the gpu and only restart right after I put the gpu in?

Ok I was wrong. The system, after rebooting with the working gpu, now is back to where we started. 聽Only igpu works and I cant have gpu and igpu in and working at the same time.

u could try stopping windows from installing its own driver to the gpu, see if that helps

and then installing the one from amd of course

just disable drivers part, unless you dont want windows update as well

i normally disable driver update from windows as they can really screw up your computer sometimes

even after disabling windows driver update and re-installing the driver from AMD?

if so, i would consider try plugging another gpu in to see if it's the slot having issues

or test the gpu somewhere else
