Hello!

So i've built my first PC (and it's actually working so far), but i have problems installing my SSD.

For my main drive, i use a m.2 SSD, which works pretty nice.

I've got a Crucial MX300 for some bucks too, but when i installed it and turned my computer on, it made cracking noises, started to smell burned and the SSD was very hot.

I thought it might have been a problem with the SSD (because i thought there is no why to plug something in the wrong way) and sent it back.

So i got my knew one, double checked all cables are plugged in the correct way and turned the PC on.

So the same thing happened and i'm sitting here with 2 fried SSD's.

1. Do you have any ideas what i could have done wrong? I use a pretty high quality Thermaltake PSU where i can monitor the voltage. Everything looks fine.

I might have plugged in the cable the wrong way on the PSU on the first SSD. I'm not sure because when i plugged it out it was very hard to do it and i thought it was the wrong way, but i'm not sure.

Plugging the new SSD onto another ouput in the PSU (after it was fried) made it still very hot.

2. Is there a way to repair these SSD's? (probably not, but maybe there is some kind of fuse in it or something...)

I've attached a picture of the cable i use for connecting the drive and the PSU, maybe this will help you

You wouldn't be able to plug in the ssd the wrong way, the connectors are specially keyed. Do you have the original psu cables? Try it with those. It may be an issue with the custom power cables.

Could you get a clearer/closer picture of that 6 pin? that black part doesn't look right.

Could just be the cable but it looks like there copper around it thats not covered? bit hard to tell.

I have the original ones, but they look exactly the same, just not sleeved. I'm scared that i will fry another device when trying them out...

I've attached a picture of it. There is also no cable going out at that black part.

There are just 5 cables...

Are u using custom cable? its best use the cable that comes with the psu the manufacturer suggest that way.

Yes, i use this Corsair custom sleeved: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00BJMDIDY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I could try the real ones, but i'm scared it won't change a thing...

if it cracked, popped, and made a smell then your drive is stuffed. I think you have plugged it in wrong or your custom cables are not wired the same as the original cables

If you're using a Thermaltake power supply with Corsair cables, that's your problem.

I am afraid that is the issue.

If u want custom cable use cablemod.

u can choose your psu model in there to match your psu and buy it from them, its safer.

dammit, you're right...

On the left are the original cables, on the right the modded

Hate my life, 2x750GB SSD'S wrecked because of this :/

Thought that they are all the same, something i won't forget for sure.

Well that's the cost of buiding you own PC, i'm glad everything else works with the Corsair Cables :D

When dealing with two different manufacturers, it's best to check compatibility before making a purchase.

And make sure u have a decent psu.

Thermalte does sell a good psu make sure u pick the good one.

or pick one from here.

tier 4 above is fine.

Got the DPS Gold, pretty satisfied and i like the fact that there is a social network where you can post your power usage and see people on a map that have the same PSU as you.

Gotta try to make a meetup with people using the same PSU as me!
