Hey peeps,

Recently installed a predator 360 on my x79 rig and was pushing for the highest OC i could manage. 5.0Ghz flat out blue screened and froze. I have 4.9 stable but there is a bit of an issue.

I have set the vCore to 1.4V but on my voltage monitoring software, I can only see the CPU running at 1.341V. Chaging the multiplier just changes the vcore even if I leave the vcore at 1.4 in the bios. 4.0Ghz -> 1.251V, 4.3Ghz-> 1.301V, 4.5Ghz-> 1.311 and 4.9Ghz-> 1.341V. It is kindda doing whatever it wants and taking my input as an overhead ceiling which is good for power consumption and heat but it is not letting me have a stable 5Ghz oc.

dont know what is going on. I am pretty sure if i force the CPU to run at 1.4V I will be able to manage 5.0+ but for some reason it is doing what it pleases. I need help forcing the cpu to run at specified vCore under load.

This is called V-drop, you need to change the line-load calibration, but be careful.

go to the DIGI+ settings, and set CPU Load Line calibration to Ultra high, and try overclocking from 4.5GHz back up, the CPU voltage will be higher, and you might need to work out safe limits again as the v-drop will be a lot lower now, and will potentially run under full load higher than set.

be careful though, you can kill CPU's by extreme overclocking like that. AMD and Intel are a bit different though, but what happened to poor Jayz can still happen on Intel, pushing 5GHz on water is pretty ballsy even for Sandy Bridge E

Yeah. i am looking at the chip right now and I have decent temps with 4.9 i dont think it want to do any higher so I wont push it. Dont want the pop of doom :/

At the same time, it's easier to kill the motherboard, but the i7 3930k isn't massively expensive now, but finding a good well binned one might be. It might be the load line calibration causing it, but 4.9GHz is pretty good, I wonder how my dual X5670's compares to it lol.

There's a really good idea of how many settings are important at close to 5GHz.

My 5960x shits all over it even at 4.4Ghz (not the final clock, can probs go higher but it was kindof a 2 minute overclock) But it is a pretty nifty chip at 4.5+ as it outperforms a 5820k

lol all I did was set multiplier to 49 and set vCore to 1.4. Been running AIDA 64 for about an hour now and the temps are in the mid 70s.

in other news, I have really high idle temps. CPU idles aroud 40C which is high for a watercooled loop. :/ load temps are acceptable though

That's probably because the chip is running at 1.4v all the time, maybe try offset mode so it has some voltage scaling

I checked in AIDA 64 and HWinfo. I have speedstep enabled so it ramps itself down when required. It is running at 0.84V but at 41-44 C depending on the core :/

Might be a bad mount. I'll try remounting it if I can.
