K so I am planning on getting a 6700k with a XFX GTR RX480, corsair h115i cooler all on an asus rog strix h270, i do want to do overclocking with this build but i am relatively new to the community. my build is trying to be good performance at a good price and why not do a little overclocking to help get the full potential of my components.. I do not plan on overclocking the motherboard and i do know i generally need a z series right? but because the processor and and graphics card are on the motherboard, im thinking that i may not be able to overclock them if i have an overclocking mobo. so my question is: Do I need a z series mobo to overclock my CPU or GPU? I know its not the typical question but i dont want to spend $300 bucks when i only need to spend $200

get a z170 motherboard, and id probably drop the i5 for a i7 and get a gtx 1070.

You can get cheaper boards. I also get a 7700k, no reason to get a 6700k.

Id replace the i7 witha i5 7500, get a b150 board, and get a 1070.

dont do this. that would need a bios update to run the kaby lake chip. get a z170 for the i7 6700k so you can overclock it.

So you are saying i need the z170 to overclock the CPU? I would have planned on getting the z170 but none of them really went with my color scheme so to say, i also found the h270 was an amazing mobo for the price but if i wanted the overclocking abilities (the z270) i would need to spend another 70 bucks.

I am also looking at a moderate Z270, that'll do just fine as well right? It looks good and had everything I would like for relatively cheap... Reinforced PCI slot for my beefy GPU. carbon fibre like pcb (its pretty as well) point is, its got the z270 chipset, it looks very nice for the priceand has everything I need and would like... Will this work? Its only 20 bucks more than the z170 that I would buy and the 270 has a few more features anyways. Take price out of consideration right now, will it work as well?

I'm also new to overclocking. I only entertained the idea of buying a new pc coz my wife wanted to use my laptop for good. So I thought of shopping around and this is my new set-up:

Processor: Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0ghz

Motherboard: Asus z170 Pro Gaming Aura

RAM: GSkill 8GB DDR4 2400mhz

Video card: MSI GTX 1070 Gaming Z 8GB

CPU Cooler: Deepcool Assasin Air Cooler

Power Supply: Seasonic 750 watts

Casing: Phanteks P400S tempered glass

OS: Windows 10 64bit Pro

SSD: Plextor 120GB

HDD: WD 2TB Blue

Keyboard: ROG Claymore RGB

Mouse: Corsair gaming mouse

I haven't explore this PC that much yet coz of my frequent travels. Some of my readings suggested that there is an option to automate the overclocking for the motherboard including the graphics card. Maybe, i'll begin there then move slowly to more advance procedures to avoid frying the PC (damn expensive!). I will appreciate if anyone can give me tips then. Thanks!
