evo 850 to evo 860 ?

kennymax89

I am going to upgrade my 990fx and fx 8350 to a z270 board and a i7 7700k. I have a Samsung 250gb 850 evo sata. What I'm wondering is if i should get the new 960 evo M.2 or not. It looks way faster but I primarily just play games and I'm wondering if the 130 bucks is worth it?

I wouldn't bother. The reason an SSD feels fast is because of the low latency. So in all honesty, you probably wouldn't even notice that the 960 is any faster.

I have a 950Pro in my desktop and an 850Pro in my laptop there is no VISIBLE difference in performance, the ONLY real reason to do a m.2 drive is for the form factor of dissapearing into the motherboard and not needing a SATA power and Data connection in the system. I also upgraded the same laptop to the 850Pro from an 840Pro and didn't notice any difference.

For purely gaming, it's not worth the price.

Even as a boot drive, PCIe M.2 SSDs are inferior to regular SATA SSDs, as the SATA controller is initialized immediately upon boot, whereas PCIe devices still have to load their own BIOS. A few extra seconds, but still a difference worth noting.

PCIe SSDs are worth their weight in gold if you record and/or stream games though.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.
