170 or 270

I bought one of the  gigabyte z170 mobo with a Skylake processor last year. I want to upgrade to one of the kaby lake so I  need bios update to support that. Does the support mean that it will support all new although modest features of kaby lake or the support just means it can run it without conflicts.  Thanks

Support just means run without conflicts as far as I know. I've read a few places that have said intel optane and 4K Netflix streaming is limited to z270

Yeah I don't think you'd benefit at all from changing your motherboard. Just update the BIOS.

An upgrade like that won't warrant a new motherboard. There's not a significant performance difference between skyl and kabyl. Zen will come out in a little bit too. So before buying any motherboard anyways I'd wait. It's coming in February

Z170 would be fine. And get 7700K anyway, it costs the same (you can reuse the i5 stock cooler, or get something better)

But you know that every new product will need some tuning, driver correction and bios update. I prefer to wait until the whole product matures.

You can't tune a CPU arch with a BIOS update.

You still can't tune CPUs with a BIOS update though :P That's reserved for GPUs. Also, CPUs don't require drivers. This is talking about the Zen CPUs/all CPUs ever, and if you're referring to GPUs, those are codenamed Vega.

Dear I was responding to Wolther who prefers to wait for Zen processor. Thanks

IF you're changing/upgrading from 6600 to 7600 then yes, you'll want to get the z270 mobo to support optane and 4k playback. Otherwise the upgrade will be less useful.

Whether its worth it or not is up to you. But everyone will chime in telling you "ITS A WASTE< THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE". Typically speaking, these are the jelly folk that can't afford frivolous purchases.

Upgrade if you want to. I did. I did it cause I wanted to.

I7-7700k@5.1ghz + 1080ti @ 2050mhz + 32gbs Ram + 2TB SSD = CSGO

i7-6700k@4.9ghz + 980ti @ 1501mhz + 16gbs Ram + 1 TB SSD = Backup

i7-3770k@4.8ghz + 680 4gb + 32gbs Ram + 500gb SSD = Retired/Office work
