The computer will be mainly used for.1080p gamming. The budget is under 1700 USD.

It will include a monitor.

I know a 1070 is overkill for 1080p, but I need the computer to last a while and the budget permits it.

1070 is perfect for future 1080p gaming.

Back in the day, I maxed everything on an R9 6970. Now it's my backup card and plays things on medium settings.

I have an RX480 and both this and the 1060 just about manage to max out everything (assuming you don't go like x16 MSFXSNROQAA or whatever :D and the other minor settings that bring a titan to it's knees at 480p.

If it was me, I'd swap the 24" to 27" monitor (I have 27" for gaming and 24" as secondary for browser, skype etc)
Totally worth it :D

Happy gaming!

Why would he get a 1070 if he can afford a 1080 and it's way better??

Do you have a monitor you could suggest within budget?

Btw, that m.2 ssd won't utilize the full potential of the m.2 slot. It's a ssd made to fit m.2. Recently got the 2.5" ssd, 275 GB, and i kinda regret not going 525 GB (Also have a 1TB HDD in my system). I came from a laptop from 128 GB. Also the 1060 6GB is enough for me, i use a 1080p screen and no problems maxing every game i play ^^. But yeah, i get why you're gonna get the 1070

Yes that would be fine. Fit them in the build:

Ermmmm...a NVMe drive is made to "fit" m.2 as welll so what's your point? :D

M.2 is a connector like Sata you know...

Anyway, may I ask why are you spending more money on the cooler than the motherboard? Kinda doesn't make sense ya know :/

ehm.. because:

Total: $1671.37

He'd have to make sacrifices in other places or add on another $200 to his budget.

I've quite a basic monitor but I think this one looks quite good:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BMB3ANE/
Don't go off hunting for 1/2 ms monitors, you won't notice the difference anyways.

As long as its LED/IPS it'll look great but make sure to check reviews :)

My 27": https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IZBIMLK/

Not as pretty but it does the job and you tend to not notice as much once you actually start using it.
Also cheaper :D

It isn't really a server part without being paired with other server hardware; paired with an H97 board like that one, you'd do better to think of that CPU as a Core i7 4770 without the iGPU, as that's what it is. It's also why it's so much cheaper despite performing on par with one.

The CPU won't affect startup times as much as the boot drive, and the Sandisk 120GB MLC SSD I included is reasonably fast. Probably not as fast as the newer MX300, but that's a TLC SSD, and will not last as long as an MLC SSD. The difference in speed isn't significant, but the difference in longevity is enormous.

Hell no.
I wouldn't go with this at all.
Sacrificing good i7 (good for recording stuff like OP wants)
Higher end mobo,
Ram not important.
Tiny ssd (wouldn't go below 240gb for OS and minor program SSD)
PSU not that important since this is still ok.

All that just to get a 1080?

I'd stick with what he has but maybe swap out the water cooler for a hyper 212 and if he can stretch budget, THEN get a 1080.
Will have a MUCH higher end system

The M.2 slot can take NVMe SSD's (Samsung Polaris for example) which are a lot faster than SATA versions. The M.2 MX300 is the same speed as the SATA MX300 but just a different form factor.

The Xeon E3 1231-v3 isn't that much slower. It has four threads and boosts up to 3.8 GHz. Furthermore, point out the functions offered by the Z170 motherboard besides overclocking ability that give it a tangible advantage? SLI isn't one.

120GB is far from 'tiny' for Windows and essential programs like Chrome, Steam, Word, and a few editing programs. Windows only takes 20GB, to begin with.

The power supply is crucial, and fortunately I chose a durable, high-quality unit.

Not just a 1080. I also included a 3440x1440 IPS monitor for a more immersive gaming experience. A GTX 1070 won't be capable of driving that for much longer, but a 1080 has the horses required to max out titles at that resolution for a while.

The decision is yours. The GTX 1070 + 1080p monitor combo will last you a while (at least get a 144Hz 1080p display), but the 3440x1440 monitor+ GTX 1080 combo gets you a more immersive gaming experience and a sharper image at the cost of a little longevity, a little CPU horsepower, and RGB lighting.

If you care about the lighting and customizable colours, I won't fault you for that. Get that if it's what you want; my intention was to provide an alternative.

Had one, it will reduce temps nicely if you plan to overclock, otherwise you're giving it a ~2year lifespan before gotta replace it anyways.

Fixed here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rVGRCy

Saved on water cooler and added 27" monitor that looks nice (look around for similar or the one I linked previously from amazon.com.

If you wanna get more performance you could swap to a 1080 but think a 1070 is perfectly fine.

Nope, the 7700k handily beats it; especially when overclocked. However, at 3440x1440 with a 1080, the two CPUs will perform identically in almost every game.
