Been telling people to do that since Microsoft released their own antivirus software back in the Windows 7 era (and after they integrated it into Windows 8/8.1 and now 10)

Used Defender since Windows 7, never an issue.  Before that was MSE, again never an issue.

I am not sure about this... I mean the AV Program is only as good as its virus definition it gets. If the AV sees a virus but doesn't know it is a virus, it will be useless. 

So who makes the virus definition (catalog)? The Company (f.e. Kaspersky) itself. And I trust a company that is specialized on defending against virus and other threats more than Microsoft who do this besides their main business. Many tests prove that M$ Defender don't do as well as other big named products like Avira, Bitdefender, etc.

For the casual internet user it should do but for professional you will need the best protection. 

I personally use Avira and I am happy with it. It is almost not noticeable in the system resources and is also free (Ok you get a popup window once in a while, but I can life with that.)
