I know its hard to tell from the picture but my friends 8gb sapphire rx480 randomly does this where the screen is covered in white lines and then restarts. At first i thought it was artifacting but the effects are not permanent and can vary dramatically, it is also worth the mention that his gpu is brand new along with a brand new psu. I wondered if the motherboard could be responsible since its one of those ultra durable micro ATX boards with an AMD APU inside. what are your thoughts ?????

I'd say it's a faulty GPU - so the answer would be to RMA it. But you should wait for more opinions first.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

GPU most likely. Drivers up to date? Also check if the GPU is seated properly: take it out and push it in, the slot might be filthy. Could help to see if this also happens on a different PC.

Looks like AMD has a faulty batch of RX480s on their hands. You're not alone.

RMA it.

Is that so? How come, or not sure yet on the reason?

Not sure on the reason, but you're not the only one with black screen issues and artifacting on an RX480.

Haven't seen people posting problems with RX470s and RX460s, so this may be limited to the full P10 chips only. Maybe there are some defect Stream Processors in there anyway causing issues (these would be disabled in an RX470 and an RX460 isn't a full P11 chip).
