This HP Pavilion is a pretty sweet deal right now, but I was wondering what the quality of HP Pavilion laptops was like. Is it comparable to Dell's higher end machines or basically anything Lenovo? I don't mind bloatware because I can easily reinstall Windows, I'm really just wondering about build quality.

They're alright. I used a cheaper one (it had a Haswell i3 and no discrete graphics), and I didn't really have any complaints about it.

The Pavilions are just like Dell's Inspiron, they vary from shitty low end laptops to somewhat decent gaming ones. It's definitely not a high end laptop, so don't expect great build quality. I've tried an older gaming Pavillion model and the screen flexed a lot when pressing on the back.

yes, but* it has some "HP baggage"

- HP is NOT a good choice if you plan to primarily use it for gaming, HP is good at office critters, which in this case also have some extra "oomph" for those other things you do at home.

- when you're a sensible human being (like their main market: office folks) the laptops are very durable, but *please* dont throw them about, they're not made to be treated roughly. if you're nice to your laptop you can almost expect it to last 8 years, if you beat it up you're asking for trouble.

I like that comparison. Makes sense and my other option was probably an Inspiron, but this one has an IPS screen and is $200 cheaper).

2nd point makes sense. I wouldn't actually even be taking it out of the house too much, so that's almost a non-issue. 1st point I'm kind of confused about what you're saying. It has a quad core CPU and a GTX 1050 with the base model.

2nd point: yes, it has, but it's not designed to have both of those run at full tilt for extensive amounts of time, if that explanaiton makes sense. my samsung RC530 is in a similar boat, it can happily max out the i7, it can happily max out the (ancient) GT540m, but when you hammer both together (like you would in gaming) for more than an hour or so, it does start to thermal throttle a decent bit.

if you're be gaming on it, it's more so for "short sessions", and not really aimed at the most demanding games.

Ah yes, that makes much more sense. I don't usually play for hours on end and really I just play Minecraft and Rocket League.

Off topic, how would a 6200u and a 940M do with those games?

just thought to put it like this: it's an office critter for someone who likes to game during their daily commute.

- the chassis means buisiness (nothing says "i'm a buisinessman" like a HP badge)

- the processor and ram mean buisiness

- you have some very "unique" ports like ethernet (yes, that's a stab at the current laptop market) and display outputs for those powerpoint presentations.

- it also has some party under the hood, capable enough to have some good fun at manageable settings.

Assuming the build quality is good, I will add that I think it is a much better choice than the Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming series. The HP uses an IPS display, whereas the Inspiron uses a TN display and not a good TN display at that.

For the FHD 1920x1080 models, at least. If you happen to want UHD, the Inspiron 7567's 3840x2160 option is true 3840x2160, whereas (unless something's changed since the 2016 model) HP's 3840x2160 upgrade option claims that resolution spec in a not-entirely-honest manner that doesn't provide the full detail of the resolution (RG/BW  Pentile). But I'd stick with FHD unless you want UHD knowing all the pros/cons involved (including no native-res gaming for modern titles).
