So currently i have (Samsung (2 x 4GB) PC3L-12800E 2Rx8 DDR3-1600 CL11 Unbuffered Server ECC Memory) in my server and i want to expand to 16GB for more VM, As it would be cheaper upgrade RAM such as addition set of 8GB or 2x4GB but I not able to find any that are the same. It is possible to buy another set of different kits and still work?  or should I wait for ZEN and sell my current server than.

Server Specs?

It should work fine with different dimms Id probably get 8gb dimms.

Fx6300

M5A78L-M

Samsung (2 x 4GB) PC3L-12800E 2Rx8 DDR3-1600 CL11

4x2TB WD REDS

500 WATTS PSU

But i mean is worth spending like ~50 bucks on ram now or should i wait and upgrade to like zen CPU and hope to god a cheap motherboard with ecc support.

What are you using it for?

Id probably just add ram, you normally don't need much cpu power.

It running FreeNAS basically as home server where backup goes and plex server which is most CPU intensive task and also acts as NextCloud and transmission. I was hoping in future to add some IP Camera support (motion detection recording) and switching to linux server/UnRaid.

You don't seem to be cpu limited. I'd get some 8gb sticks. Also for cpu I'd get something like a celeron as there much less power hungry than a 6300 or what zenith will probably use.

But i hear celeron have issues with plex encoding, my server most of time is at idle/low load so the power usage won't be far off from zen i presume. So any compatible 8GB stick or 2x4GB stick will work with the existing kit?

Any kit should work, but I'd get 8gb dimms
