I was planning to build a new desktop as an upgrade from my old dinosaur of a computer, but don't have a bunch of money to push around.  I am asking if there is potential in this new rig, and are there any incompatibility issues I should worry about?

If you have another rig instead, I plan to only spend about $700 (USD) for this. I already have the monitor and mouse.

What parts do you already have?

That CPU isn't great for the price, go Skylake/Haswell if you can

Not sure what your use case is (gaming, video editing, etc) but you probably would want something like a 1050ti over 16GB ram

Do you really need to buy a bleh membrane keyboard? just find one lying around for now and save up for a nice mechanical one.

Don't get that cpu.  For $300, you could get a 6700k which is way better, price, performance and its newer.  If you get an i5 7000 series u non overclocking chip, you could get a better gpu

I recommend these instead:

cpu:

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/3pWrxr/intel-core-i5-7600-35ghz-quad-core-processor-bx80677i57600 $220 usd

gpu:

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/YHGj4D/sapphire-radeon-rx-480-8gb-nitro-video-card-11260-07 $237.99 usd

this would save you some money for a ssd if you want too

🙂

Thanks for the advice!!!

I replaced the keyboard with a mechanical one, got the ram bundled, and the use is general gaming. I don't really want 4K ultra, but enough to where as the games I play look nice and run smooth. I'll get back to you with the monitor specs.

Sadly, the processor that you shared the link for is not the right socket type for the motherboard (LGA1150).

However I kept looking at the cpus, and saw this one: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/rjPfrH/intel-cpu-bx80646e31241v3

Also, the GPU you suggested throws this build out of my price range (goal: $600-$750).

xeon processors are not gaming processors. The gpu I used fit your budget because you spent $430 on your cpu and gpu combined and if you got an i5 7600 with a $250 gpu, your budget was well under $750. Also if you could find a good $60-$80 LGA1151 mobo this build would last a lifetime (not actually but a long time)
