Gigabit In-home Networking

Hello LTT forum! I figured if I could go anywhere to ask for advice on a tech project, here would be the place. I live in a fairly old home and do not have any wired internet in my home, I have been solely reliant on 5 GHz WiFi connections and would like to start streaming, I have attempted this previously and while my settings seem fine, I feel my internet is holding me back. I have looked into power-line Adapters for gigabit Ethernet but I am looking for cheaper solutions or suggestions, possibly for routing an Ethernet cable in the house. (Preferably without hideous blue cord running along the walls ) Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you have an attic or crawl-space, drop some lines. Super easy once you plan it out.

It's a good suggestion, but my issue is my networking equipment is on a first floor office, the attic is unfinished and has no power other than a lightbulb or two, and where I'm trying to run wires is on a second floor bedroom. Are you suggesting that I drop the cables to that room and then from there to the room?

You can always hire professionals to fish the cables through the walls and install clean looking outlets, with all of them leading to one location with a switch.

You could also do it yourself if you have the motivation and skill.

Your house should have a few walls that line up to keep the integrity of the house. Finding those walls will let you drop lines from the top-floor to the bottom and in-between. Getting a network switch for a closet on the second floor would work well since the lines can propagate from there.

Okay then, sounds like a reasonable idea. If the professional only needed to run one or two cables to a room, what could the potential cost be? Have either of you had something like that done?

I've done the job myself for my mother's house (2 floor and a basement) and my own home (single floor and attic). Cost for doing it myself was about $600 mainly for equipment.

On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate the process of linking an RJ45 cable to a wall RJ45 Female socket?

Depends how well you can crimp the cables and what kind of wall plate you use. I used these:

Product: http://www.homedepot.com/p/CE-TECH-Category-5e-Jack-White-10-Pack-5025-WH-10/204410618

Installation guide: http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfImages/08/084fe600-3db2-428b-a131-082911acf5d0.pdf

You'll install those end-caps to this wall plate:
