2X4GB RAM or 4GB+8GB RAM?

I have a laptop which comes with 4GB RAM, and has a free ram slot. I'm planning on editing on the laptop, but the 4Gb sure is less for the task.

I know that using a similarly clocked RAM will enable me to use it in dual channel mode, giving a bonus of 10% performance boost.

OR

I could get another smiliarly clocked 8gb RAM, and extend the total capacity to 12 gb. As some video editors say, the more the merrier(?)

But, will it be 'dual channel' even if the sizes are uneven?

Which capacity of RAM should I get??

Help, and thanks in advance!

Firstly. What laptop. Secondly. is the 4gb soldered in. Some business notebooks do this where the 4gbs come standard soldered in. In that case you can simply slot in a 8gb or even 16gb stick and it'll work perfectly fine. However, if it is not (the 4gb is a stick that can be removed), then you need to get 2x4gb sticks or 2x8gb sticks.

Id get a 8gb stick. Its not a 10% perforamnce difference, and the extra ram is better than the slightly slower speed

Nope, they will work fine with mismatched dimms.

The laptop is Acer Aspire E5 572G

I don't think the 4gb ram is soldered onto the mobo
