As someone with somewhat wide knowledge about computer hardware and software, this is something I don't really understand, and something I hope someone here on LTT has the answer which might solve my problem.

Alright so I have an Asus ROG gaming laptop (GL552VW) with an i7 6700HQ. I'm aware that the temperature mentioned in the title is not a big deal, especielly for a laptop cpu, and most of the time I don't reach much higher than that. There are some exceptions (peaking at 90C in The Division and a few other games). What's really confusing here is really that in a few titles, I get this insanely high temp although the game doesn't really require much performance. Today I checked the cpu load and it was 11% when the temperature was at 80C which is, well, weird. Considering I've played games using well over 50% cpu usage and having a lower temperature. Hold on, it gets more confusing. I've even tried with having Turbo activated and deactivated (stock speed is at 2.6GHz and 3.5GHz in Turbo) and there is barely any difference in temperature. I also tried changing cpu affinity, only allowing games to use 2 cores, did the performance drop? Quite a bit, did the temperature? Maximum of 4C degrees drop. I'm confused and disappointed, and as much as I like my laptop, it's sad having this issue with heat. Maybe I should've chosen the cheaper version with an i5 6300HQ, because frankly, in what universe would an i5 be the bottleneck in a PC with a 960m?

If it's of anyones interest, I use HWMonitor to view my temperatures.

Try using another program like Speccy to monitor temps.

HWMonitor says mine idles at 55-60C, and maxes out at 70-75C when 100% load, sometimes it just doesn't read right.

Tried Speccy, unfortunately it has the exact same result, I've got both HWMonitor and Speccy opened at the same time...

Really? I have a i7 4790k and a 980 ti, my cpu goes to a low of 30 celcius and a average of 35 celcius, and my gpu stays at 55 celcius without fans running

CPU - i7-4790k

GPU - MSI 980 Ti

Mobo - MSI Z97 Gaming 5

Memory - 32 GB DDR3

Storage - 3.4 TB

Keep in mind it's a laptop I'm using, not a desktop. My temperatures can be really low, when surfing or playing certain games, but for whatever reason, some games, despite not having much cpu usage, makes my cpu extremely hot. A mystery to me.

Maybe get on of those things that cool down your laptop (called laptop coolers)

Sigh, don't you understand what the problem is? The cpu getting hotter during less load than other games. Also, I already have a laptop cooler, it barely helps.

Could you intake or exhaust vents be clogged with anything? I had a similar issue on an older laptop years back and a vacuum to the vents fixed it.

It can't be that, it's very clean, and like I said, the mystery is not the cpu getting hot in itself, it's that it gets hotter in some games that have low cpu usage compared to more demanding games with high cpu usage which makes no sense at all.

If you're brave enough, open your laptop and try reapplying thermal paste, I do it on mine every 6 months or so because I live in hot climate.
