Hello,

this is my current System:

CPU : Intel Core i5-3570K, Overclocked to 4x 4.20GHz
Mainboard: ASUS P8Z77-M, Intel Z77
GPU: Gainward GeForce GTX 670 Phantom 2048MB GDDR5 (256 bits)
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 (2x 4GB)
Power Supply: 600W - BeQuiet! Straight Power E9
CPU-Cooler: BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 3
No SSD

I want to invest in a GTX 1070 to run modern games and future titles like Star Citizen (if it will be released anytime) in good quality at 60fps and more. In addition to that i was thinking about getting a SSD and invest in 16GB of RAM with 1866Mhz. This all together would cost around 800€.

At the moment I'm not sure if it wouldn't be better to invest into a new system to get things like DDR4 RAM, a newer CPU and an insulated case. Since my 3570K does not heat over 41°C at full load i could Overclock it up to 4.50GHz without any problems i guess.

So what do you guys think? Could it be better to wait for a new GPU gengeration maybe?

Thanks for you help!

I'd wait for Ryzen before you upgrade the CPU, but if you can afford an i5 7600k or better then that's still a decent CPU.

When it comes to GPU, why do you need a 1070 for 1080p 60fps? How desperate are you for futureproofing? The price difference between these tiers of GPU make upgrading more often actually cheaper in the long-run than buying something expensive now and keeping it for ages. Vega looks to top out as basically the same as a 1080, only a year and a half later. Six months ago it would have been exciting, but all it does now is hopefully make the 1070 and 1080 cheaper.

All considered, my advice is to get a GTX 1060 or RX 480 now, and wait a couple of months before deciding which CPU to get.

I'd wait to see how much the RX 490 ends up costing. If it's between a 1080 and 1070 in price it might be worth picking up instead if you can afford it.

The rest of your upgrades sound like a good idea. Do you need more RAM? Do you find yourself maxing out the memory?

There's no need for a CPU upgrade at all :P The 3570k is more than capable.

Where does the OP mention 1080P? ;)

I just cant see a real improvement besides the power consumption between the CPUs.

My last GPU was the 8800GT :D My GTX 670 is reaching it's limits now and i normally buy a high-end GPU and keep it for 3-5 years. I don't have a problem with buying GPU thats 1 year old at all.

Edit: I always play on 1080p and i am thinking about getting a 4k monitor in the future. I don't know if it is worth investing in 4k since i heard that it may have problems with desktop applications.

There's a decent improvement going from quad-core Ivy Bridge to quad core Kaby Lake. There's been a decent IPC upgrade in those 5 years. Whether they'll impact you if you're limited by a 60hz display is another issue. You also want to keep an eye on the specific games you want to play, Star Citizen seems the sort of game that would be quite CPU intensive.

Another improvement, which I have no idea if it would apply to you, is in old games. A lot of old games are easily bottlenecked by their use of only 1 or 2 CPU cores. These would benefit quite a lot from the IPC improvements.

There are circumstances in which a CPU upgrade would help you a lot, and there are also circumstances in which it wouldn't.

Yeah I've had that GPU philosophy before, with both CPU and GPU. I'm probably going to keep doing it whether it makes sense for me or not xD
