Hi all,  I've recently been given my brothers old graphics card (GTX 970) and I installed it with no problems, changed drivers and all that. Worked flawlessly for a week then suddenly my monitor lost connection whilst playing a game so I had to restart my computer.
Here's the problem:
After the BIOS screen I am stuck with a black screen that has a white bar across the middle and dotted multi-coloured pixels above it. I have tried 2 different monitors and still had the same problem. I was not able to fix this issue so I removed the graphics card, re-installed my old one (GTX 460) and everything worked perfectly. I believe the graphics card is past it's warranty date hence I have come here for help.

PC Specs:
- i7 960 (3.2ghz)
- 750w corsair cx750m psu
- 8gb corsair ram
- ASUS P6X58D-E motherboard

In addition to what @nerdslayer1 said, you can also try a different connector (ie if you were using HDMI, try VGA or Displayport). It could be a connection issue.

High chance it's a bad cable or a dead gpu due to a memory issue.

UPDATE:

I tried installing the 970 again with the solutions recommended and it worked fine so I have been using it today then suddenly my monitor lost connection again and the same thing has happened. I tried rebooting many times with the same result. I put my old graphics card in and it booted fine again then I reinstalled the 970 and it seems to work fine again. Seems very strange to me so still not sure what's causing it. Something I feel worth mentioning is that each time the monitor has lost connection I have been halfway through playing The Witcher 3, which is quite graphically intensive but this could just be a coincidence.
