Hello!

I am planning on getting a new CPU for my machine. I currently have an Intel Core i5 4460 @ 3.2GHz and it isn't enough for what I need.

The specifications of my machine:

Intel Core i5 4460

ASUS Z97-P Motherboard

MSI GeForce GTX 960

What I need the CPU for:

Gaming (High settings, above 100fps on games such as Overwatch, Star Wars Battlefront, Team Fortress 2 and new releases)

Recording these games at high bitrate, 1080p 60fps.

Streaming these games at 720p 60fps

Video editing (1080p 60fps low latency scrubbing)

High multi-tasking (Google chrome, video editing. programming and Skype all usually at the same time)

My monitor is 1080p at 60Hz for anyone needing that information.

I am looking for a CPU that is overclockable

Thank you for taking your time to read this!

CPU: Intel Core i7 8700

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070

MOBO: ASUS Z370-F STRIX

RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2133MHz

Your choices are limited really to the i5 4690k or the i7 4970k (Because of your socket limitations and I'm assuming they can still be found). I would skip the Broadwell line of CPUs.

I think that I might get a lot of bad looks for saying this. But you might want to wait for the very hyped Ryzen CPU line-up that is scheduled to be released sometime in Q1 of this year. Multiple cores aren't better for gaming but they are when you are trying to stream though, might be something to keep in mind.

I'm not giving any bad looks... I like the idea. The question then is going to be budget.

EvilCat70, what is your budget for the upgrade?

Well, we don't know exact prices for Zen, I mean Ryzen, I mean Summit Ridge, whatever. Give it a month or so and we should have confirmed prices for the platform.

Assuming AMD doesn't completely bone us with the prices, we should be able to fit a decent 8 thread CPU and motherboard into your budget.

Also, I come from Tom's Hardware. I am used to people being from different countries and using different currencies.

Ok thanks! I'm just running through ark.intel.com looking at different CPUs and I've heard hyper-threading is really useful.

i7 4790k would be better with Z97 but a 4770k would work.

Does it matter what generation it is?

4790k works best on the bios level with z97. 4770k works best on the bios level with z87. Although most z97 boards will be able to function with a 4770k you might run into stability problems (this is rare though).

Ok I'm just running around looking for great deals on the 4790k

It is a great CPU and I would highly recommend it. Especially if you can get a good overclock on it.

Ok! I stumbled across the i5 4690k, would that be good too? I know it doesn't have hyper threading but what big of a difference does hyper threading make? Also will I need water cooling if I overclock?

Same shit,if he is going to overclock it will be same. Good cooling and he can overclock these two CPUs for same frequency.

Would 'good cooling' mean water cooling? Or just a very good air cooler?
