Hi,

My work computer seems to perform pretty badly for a computer of its stature (Xeon i5 1230, 16gb ram, some firepro gpu, and 2x Seagate Barracuda 16mb cache 500GB 7200RPM HDD's [only 100gb used], Windows Server 2012 R2 = basically windows 8).

Problem is that I'm forever waiting for things to load/applications become responsive a bit more frequent than my liking, I'm aware that everything basically works bar the odd unresponsive page every like hour but I'm so sure even with a HDD it's not this slow. Performance reminds me of my laptop at times that rocks a 5400 RPM HDD.

So I had a look in the resource monitor and didn't see anything worrying. The only thing of note is my HDD is usually low usage but occasionally spikes to like 80mb when I open the resource monitor itself. Any suggestions how I can try to diagnose this/any free HDD speed benchmarking tool. If I can get something to show hopefully I can pass this on so I can get a parts replacement or something.

Thank you!

Try using Chrystal disk mark, it's a free bench marking utility for hard drives.

You could try running Windows' built-in disk diagnostic tool, although you do need admin permissions in order to access that (which might be an issue on your work machine).

It looks like it's fine but it doesn't feel like it's performing at that speed.
